Water based paints can cover a variety of technologies and products but in its simplest form it means the product has been manufactured with water as its ‘solvent’. Water based paints can nearly always be thinned and cleaned up (if required/specified) with clean, cold water. Therein lies a small advantage in itself as you will never be caught short of thinner/cleaner and best of all its effectively free! Just like solvent based paints, water based products can include epoxies, polyurethane, acrylics, and more. As a general rule they will be safer to use and lower odour than solvent based products. When using a spray gun, it is critical to thin paint. Because the atomization of paint in an HVLP gun is much smaller than in a spray gun, it is easy to overspray.
