About this deal

With their colourful plumage and melodious song, it’s no surprise that goldfinches were prized as a cage bird in the 19th century. What may be more of a surprise is that they were also used like canaries to detect the presence of dangerous gasses in coal mines (a practice that only ended in 1996).

Most of our UK breeding goldfinch population will overwinter in the UK. They live on seeds so are well adapted to survive the winter. Adult Goldfinches do not change colour. However, they do appear duller after they moult at the end of their breeding season. They will regain their bright colours when the tips of the new feathers wear away.

From blunk to brickfielder: our wonderful words for weather

Breeding starts from late April onwards. They nest in trees at the end of branches, occasionally in hedgerows or shrubs. The nest is constructed by the female, occasionally assisted by the male, and is made of roots, grasses, moss, lichens and with wool. Three to seven bluish-white eggs are laid, some with red-brown spotting and streaking, sometimes very dark. The male feeds the female whilst she is incubating the eggs. This carries on for twelve to thirteen days. The young leave the nest after thirteen or fourteen days. Normally two broods, sometimes three. Goldfinch Habitat

A Goldfinch’s call is a harsh ‘geez’. The song is a twinkling, liquid ‘tsweet-witt-witt’. Where and when do Goldfinches nest? The yellow stripe on the wings is longer and wider in males than they are in females. Males’ beaks are also slightly curved, whereas it is straight on females. While there are some cultural references that they might not get, I would actually recommend this book for middle schoolers. The illustrations are catchy and the information is at a level that would be perfect for sparking a tween’s interest to know more. I probably would have enjoyed this much more myself if I’d read it as a middle schooler. The artwork in this guide is also exceptional. This is truly a book to awaken interest in the young and nostalgia in us older folk.Migrant numbers depend on how cold it gets in winter. In mild years, many will stay. But in long, harsh winters more will migrate to warmer climates. I think this book would have done better if it had settled on an audience and then gone for it. It has a sort of split personality and never really sheds that. While, I did like learning some of the terms, I found myself mostly struggling through this book because it felt so completely repetitive. I think this is best used as a coffee table book and for a conversation starter. Smaller spaces or on a budget? If you only have space for one feeder, then you might want to consider a seed mix to get a range of birds feeding. There are various mixes available or you can mix your own, using oats & various grains. So, let’s take a look at some of these collective nouns for birds. What Are The Collective Nouns For Birds? Many birds living in northern areas migrate south in winter months, while those in the western part of the range are usually resident all year round. Where do European Goldfinches live?

Over a hundred years ago there’s a mention of the goldfinches decline in an old newspaper 2. Originally the goldfinch was a farmland bird and it’s believed that the numerous factors have caused all farmland birds to decline 3. Like the fate of many farmland species ultimately they’ve starved to death. On average, Goldfinches live for around two to three years, although some have been known to live for longer. How common are goldfinches? This is a charming book, goldfinches or otherwise. And yes, it is quirky too. I originally chose it thinking it might be something I would want to get for my nieces: informative but fun and with cute artwork. Birds infected with this disease will be lethargic and have puffed-out feathers. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to help in this scenario. Why Do Goldfinches Change Colour? You can also make your own suet mix, re-filling coconut halves or shaping as you require. Don't forget to put out water. There are many collective nouns for magpies, but perhaps the most common names for a group of magpies are a conventicle, gulp, mischief, tidings or tribe of magpies [i] . What’s The Collective Noun For A Group of Crows? In the wild, Goldfinches mainly eat seeds from small plants including dandelions, groundsel, thistles, and teasels. They also like to eat the seeds of birch and alder trees.
