About this deal

In winter, snowshoe hares turn their attention to brushwood, bark, and buds from both coniferous and deciduous trees and shrubs. years after it had been clearcut and burned; at this stage, ground cover was similar to that of the uncut forest. From the beginning, Lena is different than many of her peers, but Lichtarowics doesn't rely on "not-like-other-girls" tropes to endear Lena (on the contrary, Lena's practical way of thinking is sometimes taken to such extremes that she alienates everyone--including the reader). In older stands (more than 25 years), stem density begins to decline and cover for snowshoe hares decreases. Inspired by the memories of the her grandmother, which the author recorded before she died, the narration of "The Snow Hare" follows these historical events and their effect on all individuals living in Poland at that time.

From under the settee, a damp nose appears, followed by orange eyes, gleaming with anticipation, then the rest of Ivan Pavlov scrabbles out. But destiny has other plans for her, and Lena is forced to postpone her dream in favor of becoming the wife of a military officer and a mother in a loveless marriage. After the start of the war, Lena and her family are deemed enemies of the state and are sent to a labor camp in Siberia where she experiences love and loss at the edge of the world.

A moving and heartbreaking story that gives us a different perspective on the war than we usually get. The first attempt failed to manipulate predators effectively, and plots containing food supplements were quickly overwhelmed by predators moving into the area.

In Minnesota, aspens, willows, grasses, birches, alders, sumacs, and strawberries are consumed when green. We thank the Champagne and Aishihik, and Kluane First Nations, for supporting our work within their traditional territory. In this chapter we provide a synopsis of the key results obtained from these experiments and discuss how the results alter the current understanding of snowshoe hare dynamics. Most of the novels I’ve read set just before, during, and/or after World War II, involve events taking place in Great Britain or Germany, so this brutal but tender story about the human experience of war in Poland immediately grabbed my attention. Phase-dependent climate–predator interactions explain three decades of variation in neonatal caribou survival.

The brown-crusted ground is an acre wide and thicketed with reeds and bulrushes, dry enough to walk on in the summer, but a bog, alive with trout and carp as soon as the October rains fall and the San bursts its banks. These hypotheses usually center on food limitation, patterns of predation, and links between food supply and predation.

Her family supports her dreams, and provide her with schooling and books; but her mother is also hoping that Lena will forget about the doctor dreams, when she falls in love with a suitable man. Her mother's dream, however, is to make sure her two daughters marry well, and in that vein, she manipulates Lena into marrying a Polish officer, even though Lena doesn't love him and she's been miraculously accepted into the first university medical class that will accept female students. Snowshoe hares have excellent hearing, which helps them to identify imminent attacks from predators. In northwestern Oregon, male peak breeding activity (as determined by testes weight) occurs in May and is at the minimum in November.

Her story turns in unexpected directions that are so masterfully crafted as to feel like the inevitability of history. The snowshoe hare winter diet is dominated by bog birch ( Betula glandulosa), which is preferred but not always available. It's Lena's resolve, and the way she she allows herself to be shaped by love in hostile and isolating environments, that make her so compelling and make her story quietly inspiring. Hares from farther South have shorter, less-dense, and less-white winter coats than their Northern counterparts. Even though I struggled with the pacing and with connecting with Lena’s character through the first half of the book, I came to admire how Lena used her characteristic resolve to hold on to hope and take care of her people.
