Equally, Trazyn is described as 'a chronicler and archivist', 'the historical expert' and 'Archaeovist' (wouldn't be Warhammer if they didn't make up a few new words.

Here is a quick description and cover image of book The Infinite and The Divine (Warhammer 40,000) written by Robert Rath which was published in —.As it develops, the plot also digs into the painful history of the Necrons and their ill-fated alliance with the C’tan, and what biotransference has done to the once-glorious Necrontyr empire (not-really-a-spoiler – it’s not great). Think ambushes, assassination attempts, sneaky time manipulation, technological wonders and ancient melodrama resulting in a few impressively madcap action set-pieces (including battles against dinosaurs, just for that added bit of fun). It makes, obviously, for a fun story that's still punctuated by sufficient explosions to meet the Black Library quota.

They’re still vulnerable to very relatable and human mistakes, and ultimately they’re just tremendously entertaining to read about. It's mentioned that Necron stage plays can take over a decade to be performed in full, and Orikan regularly spends whole centuries in meditation and thinks nothing of it.

At its heart this is a story about two bickering old men whose rivalry ebbs and flows over time, to the point where the original source of discontent is almost irrelevant. As riddles unwind and ancient secrets are revealed, the question remains: will their feud save the necron race or destroy it?

It does require a little bit of knowledge of the Warhammer 40K universe to fully appreciate, but if you like sci-fi dark comedies, it is well worth the little investment to learn what an "Aeldari" is or what is meant by a Necron's "Necrodermis. Both of these attitudes draw directly on real existing attitudes - STEM bros who think all our problems can be solved by engineering, vs cultural creators who think 1,000 space marines is a sensible number for intergalactic warfare.

For those of us working in universities right now, the struggle between kinds of knowledge at the heart of this book is very real.Trazyn, initially foiled by Orikan's manipulation of time in Necron Night Court, finds a solution in the form of an artefact. After Orikan steals the Astrarium Mysterios from Trazyn’s galleries on Solemnace, their enmity escalates into a deadly feud as, over the course of millennia, each attempts to outdo the other in pursuit of the ancient artifact and the power (or in Trazyn’s case, the collectible history) they hope it can unlock. Time Dissonance: As immortal Necrons, Orikan and Trazyn speak casually of centuries and even millennia. The problem, as Orikan discovers at the end, is that culture forms the bedrock to give purpose to that undertaking - once you leave your sense of self behind, all that's left is base-level urges like hunger that sap the meaning and satisfaction from the achievement. It’s also a story which shows the 40k galaxy from a different viewpoint to usual, illustrating its depth and scale as seen by a race whose technological power, artificial longevity and tragic history gives them a unique perspective.
