About this deal

He’s obviously made his character into something of a parody of his own being, a projection of how he’d see himself in a perfect world. His book, The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair won three French literary prizes, including the Grand Prix du Roman from the Académie Française, and was a finalist for the Prix Goncourt. This can be an effective storytelling device, but in this case, waiting for the private investigator heroine to get to where the reader is at the beginning of the story feels interminable.

Mysteries: Joël Dicker’s ‘The Enigma of Room 622’ - WSJ

At its core, The Enigma of Room 622 is adolescent, a YA mystery that thinks big but in a childish way -- down to Macaire using lemon juice as invisible ink (yes, it works, but . And the Verbier setting made me imagine myself skiing in the Alps and enjoying a wonderful apres-ski. Fast readers may get the most enjoyment from all this if they can fly lightly over the clunky dialogue, flat characters, improbable behavior (“Sagamore, swallowing the last slice of pizza, stood up”), repetitions, and clichés, and so quickly motor past the first 400 pages to the point where the investigation finally picks up some speed.I’m still not sure of a couple of things, and I won’t specify what those are because I don’t put spoilers in my reviews. As per usual, multiple simultaneously interweaving characters and plot lines are quickly let loose on your imagination, all of which converge at a snail’s pace to a single end near the end of the book. If you’re not familiar with author Joël Dicker, it’s not surprising as his books are written in French and only a few have been translated to English so far.

However, I think some of the issues are due to a poor translation which you can’t blame the author for. I imagine the crushing weight of having to ‘redo the trick now’ has devastating effects not only on an author’s motivation, but also on his or her creativity. Despite the relatively dark subject matter around which the story revolves, it is coloured by an atmosphere part-ridiculous, part-mad. And, speaking of international banking laws – I’ve always been a fan of bank thrillers, especially the ones that involve Swiss banks. Lies After Death is a crime debut for KJ Dando, someone who has had various jobs and has served in the British Army in the Balkans and Iraq.
