About this deal

These collars are designed to stop slugs and snails from reaching the base of the plant, effectively preventing damage to the fruit and leaves. When the fruits appear a few months later, they can be ruined by mud splash and rotting due to contact with wet soil. Not only do these mats provide a barrier against slugs and other crawling pests, but they also help to keep your strawberries clean and free from dirt and debris. Post moderation is undertaken full-time 9am-6pm on weekdays, and on a part-time basis outwith those hours.

The mats can be used under pots or directly on the soil and come in two sizes to accommodate different planting areas. They are characterised by having very well developed root systems and, on average, will go on to produce 3-4 trusses per plant, which in turn will help to generate more flowers and fruit – 400g+ of berries per plant! I have got straw under my strawberries, but I am not happy with it, as it is such an arbour for slugs which can't be seen. Strawberries need space and feed wherever they're grown, so restrict yourself to no more than three plants in a 30-litre pot.It also makes a convenient prop for covering the crop with netting should you need to keep birds at bay. Despite the luscious fruits they produce from early summer onwards, strawberries are remarkably easy to grow and manage, and are also totally hardy in the UK. Viruses are usually spread by aphids, but soil pathogens - fungi, nematodes and eelworms - can also be responsible.

I'm trying this: From a roll of secondhand lino I cut a piece about a foot square, a wiggly cut to the centre and a hole. These durable mats are made from a specially formulated material that creates a barrier around your plants, effectively deterring pests from getting close. Leave 8-10cm lengths of frame protruding from the other side to act as pegs, securing them with nails. Most strawberries produce a single crop between late May and late July and they are classified as early, mid or late season depending on when they ripen during this period. There are also perpetual varieties available, which can be used to extend the season by producing fruits from August to the first frosts. We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse. I have my strawberries growing in 2 pots - smaller one stacked on top of bigger one - and slugs can't be bothered to crawl up!

If the initial age verification is unsuccessful, we will contact you asking you to provide further information to prove that you are aged 18 or over. It is important that we continue to promote these adverts as our local businesses need as much support as possible during these challenging times. To help prevent these problems, it’s a good idea to place a fabric strawberry mat (available from Marshalls) around the base of each plant – this will also act as a moisture-retaining mulch. These adverts enable local businesses to get in front of their target audience – the local community. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself. These durable mats are made from a strong, UV-resistant material that can withstand the elements and last for multiple seasons. If it's a plastic mulch, then you'd need room around the crown to let the rain in, plus some slug pellets underneath as a precaution. Keep the area clean by removing any debris such as soil and leaves, as this will help to maintain the effectiveness of the barrier.

They'll also help the soil retain moisture, deter slugs from your crops and keep the fruit free from muddy rain splashes. Strawberry plants growing in containers are more easily protected by simply draping a sheet of netting over the top (something you shouldn’t do with an entire bed because birds will likely get trapped underneath). I have even seen some like foil/shiney type that allows the light to reflect back up from under the plant to help ripening.

We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. Rejuvenate strawberry plants by cutting them back when they have finished fruiting and applying a feed. Additionally, our Strawberry Mats come with impregnated with copper, which slugs and snails particularly dislike. Protect your strawberry plants and enjoy a bountiful harvest with our Gardening Naturally Strawberry Mats.
