The influx of willing hands meant that plans for a major irrigation system in the Lower Chubut valley could finally go ahead. Agriculture was at times practised beyond this limit in nearby areas of Patagonia but populations reverted at times to non-agricultural lifestyles. Over the next several years new settlers arrived from both Wales and Pennsylvania, and by the end of 1874 the settlement had a population totalling over 270. The Colorado and Barrancas rivers, which run from the Andes to the Atlantic, are commonly considered the northern limit of Argentine Patagonia. Several volumes of memoirs on Patagonia have been published, including Memorias de la Patagonia (1980) by R.Patagonia has always been Argentina's main area, and Chile's only area, of conventional oil and gas production. The unity of the community - so important to Michael D Jones, whose dream they had worked so hard to realise - began to crumble.

The colony suffered badly in the early years with floods, poor harvests and disagreements over the ownership of land, in addition the lack of a direct route to the ocean made it difficult to bring in new supplies. The crested caracara ( Caracara plancus) is one of the characteristic objects of a Patagonian landscape; the presence of austral parakeets ( Enicognathus ferrugineus) as far south as the shores of the strait attracted the attention of the earlier navigators, and green-backed firecrowns ( Sephanoides sephaniodes), a species of hummingbird, may be seen flying amid the snowfall.
