About this deal

It helps children to make connections between what they read and what they already know, while also enhancing their writing skills. Not all ducks are as hard-working as ‘Farmer Duck’, but nevertheless, they are pretty spectacular birds. Read the story again, this time leaving spaces for children to join in with the repeated phrases and animal noises. They are an integral part of the story and they also express the strong affection that the ducks friends have for him. Last year she turned twenty - one and I bought her a copy of Farmer Duck and we both burst into tears.

We read stories every night before bedtime in Polish and English but I think Leah prefers when I read in Polish, as she has story time at school every day when she can listen in English. Whilst the lazy farmer stays in bed, little Farmer Duck does all the work in the house and on the farm. Through the story children learn how working together and helping out friends is the right thing to do and ultimately reaps rewards whereas being lazy like the farmer won't get you very far! Created in collaboration with Walker Books, this engaging Farmer Duck Comprehension focuses on the first page of the story when the lazy farmer and hard-working duck are introduced. The story is a good one of a farmer who gets lazy when he learns he can send his duck to do all his work but the other animals of the farm aren’t happy with this turn of events and decide to do something about it.It includes a short extract from the book, as well as four comprehension questions for learners to answer. However, by the end of the story the lazy farmer gets his commupence when the other farm animals decide to teach him a lesson!

Young children can join in and it could also be a fantastic tool for circle time: talk about emotions, team work, hard work etc. I really enjoyed using this book within my class and we extended the knowledge of the character to informal letter writing which the class really enjoyed.

All the hoeing, gardening, taking care of the other animals, ironing, washing dishes, cooking are really wearing Duck down. gets too much for duck, his friends the cow, sheep and hens, who love duck very much, have a meeting with all the other farm animals to find a solution to ease poor ducks plight and rid themselves of the lazy farmer. The duck cooks and cleans, tends the fields and cares for the other animals on the farm – and all while the farmer lies in bed!

Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell, Helen Oxenbury | Waterstones

Created using illustrations directly from the book, children can look at the six sequencing cards and talk about what they can see. Develop children’s understanding of the lovely story with this beautifully illustrated Farmer Duck Comprehension Mat. This wonderfully illustrated and funny book from Martin Waddell tells the tale of the hardworking duck how does everything from feeding the cows to shooing the hens safely into their coop at night without a rest. I personally enjoyed reading about the reverse roles of the Duck and the farmer duck, which beats a tradition tale of a Farmer. The illustrations go from gray and gloomy, when the duck is doing all the work, to bright and sunny, when the farmer gets his comeuppance.Helen Oxenbury's watercolor illustrations really communicate Duck's feelings and his weariness as he takes care of the farm despite the fact that all he ever utters is Quack.
