Derwent Pastel Pencils sharpen beautifully either with a sharpener, knife or sandpaper block so you can achieve a good point for finer detail and with 72 vibrant, fully blendable colours you can create a wide range of different hues and tints. Any result above Blue Wool 6 (ASTM II) is considered to be VERY GOODand will not fade for over 100 years in gallery conditions. Now some may see this as stating the obvious, however, if you have a jar filled with colored pencils and pastel pencils and you are working away, in all likelihood, you may lift a pastel pencil and not realise until it was too late. However, despite the fact that Derwent's pastel pencils behave like soft pastels, they sharpen incredibly well using Derwent's Super-point manual sharpener. As you can see from the images, the actual pencil is made from Californian cedar wood and lacquered with this beautiful burgundy color.

When it comes to working with pastels, the surface you use is so important and pastel pencils are no exception. Much to my surprise, using the pencils felt incredibly similar to that of the soft pastel blocks I've used in the past. Use with a slightly textured pastel paper to get the most out of these pencils and blending brushes and paper stumps for easy and precise blending.

At the time, for some reason I thought it was highly unlikely due to their chalky and dusty composition. From compact sets of 6 or 12 pencils for quick sketches and studies, to larger sets of 24, 36, and 72 pencils for more extensive projects, there's an option for every level of creativity. If you have any breathing problems such as asthma, pastels may not be the medium for you, or you could opt to work with pastel pencils which creates far less dust.
