Jim, Uncle (26 June 2012). "Best Worms For Bait Fishing". Uncle Jim's Worm Farm . Retrieved 3 February 2023. The mitochondrial genetic characteristics of the Irish population of E. fetida could be the result of reproductive isolation, so suggests that this sample may constitute an unrecognized species or subspecies of E. fetida. [15] Reproduction [ edit ] E. fetida copulating in a compost bin Not that you likely would have wanted to test this out, but according to Edwards and Bohlen (1996), Eisenia fetida (the Red Worm) gets its name from the fact that its coelomic fluid smells like garlic (‘fetid’ basically means foul smelling).

Red Worm Liquid Bait Fish Additive,100ml Concentrated Red Worm Liquid

Chopped worm is one of the very best ways to put together a good bag of quality fish, especially during the colder months. Introducing a pole cup of chopped up dendrobaena worms will attract fish on lakes, canals and on slower flowing rivers, but it’s not a great technique to use on fast and powerful rivers as the worms will simply be washed away. Eisenia fetida, known under various common names such as manure worm, [2] redworm, brandling worm, panfish worm, trout worm, tiger worm, red wiggler worm, etc., is a species of earthworm adapted to decaying organic material. These worms thrive in rotting vegetation, compost, and manure. They are epigean, rarely found in soil. In this trait, they resemble Lumbricus rubellus.

If you have a friend with an established wormery or compost bin, then they may be able to give you some worms from their colony. How do composting worms reproduce?

Conditions required These little worms are a favourite among tench, bream and roach – they absolutely adore redworms. What’s more, redworms are the perfect size bait for these species too. Bream, roach, tench, carp, chub and barbel will all accept a dendrobaea or a piece of dendrobaena worm.

3. Making compost in your wormery

The best place to find a readily available supply of redworms is a well-established compost heap. The warm, rotting vegetation provides a healthy home for the worms which will soon breed and thrive in that sort of environment.

A well-maintained wormery shouldn't smell, and can be kept indoors if required. If put outdoors, consider where you position it, as it needs some protection from the elements. Placing the composter against a wall or fence will help shelter it from too much sun or rain. Townsend, Craig; Ebizuka, Yutaka, eds. (2010). Natural products structural diversity-I, secondary metabolites: organization and biosynthesis. Vol.1 (1sted.). Boston: Elsevier. p.393. ISBN 978-0-08-045381-1. A wormery should be kept in a shed or a sheltered area of the garden where it gets neither too cold in the winter nor too hot in the summer Chopped up worms also make a superb fish-attracting additive for your groundbait mix. Bream especially will be attracted to a pile of groundbait laced with many small worm pieces, with their juices escaping into the water. Fishing with chopped worms E. fetida is closely related to E. andrei, also referred to as E. f. andrei. The only simple way of distinguishing the two species is that E. fetida is sometimes lighter in colour. Molecular analyses have confirmed their identity as separate species, and breeding experiments have shown that they do produce hybrids. [14]If too much waste is added for the worms to cope with then the wormery may start to smell. This could also attract flies and possibly vermin. Remove and dispose of excess or undigested food. Wait until the worms start digesting the top layer of food before adding further waste.
