About this deal

If the Moselle department still existed in its limits of between 1815 and 1871, its population at the 1999 French census would have been 1,089,804 inhabitants. The current Moselle department, whose limits were set in 1919, had less population, with only 1,023,447 inhabitants. This is because the industrial area of Briey and Longwy lost in 1871 is more populated than the rural areas of Château-Salins and Sarrebourg gained in 1919. The southern part of the department, especially around Saulnois, has remained more rural. Josef Adolf Schmoll alias Eisenwerth: Die Mosel von der Quelle bis zum Rhein (Deutsche Lande – Deutsche Kunst). 2nd edition, Munich/Berlin, 1972 The area of the department of Moselle is 6 216,27 km ². Population density of the department of Moselle is 166,78 inhabitants per km². The Moselle winegrowing region lies along the Moselle with a cultivated area of about 10,540ha (26,000 acres). The largest part, currently just under 9,000ha (22,000 acres), is on German soil in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland; the Luxembourg part has an area of about 1,300ha (3,200 acres) (see Wine in Luxembourg). Upstream on the Moselle the vineyards extend into France as far as Seille in the region of Côtes de Moselle with an area of 130ha (320 acres) and to the region around Toul ( Côtes de Toul) covering 110ha (270 acres).

Johann August Klein: Das Moselthal zwischen Koblenz und Zell mit Städten, Ortschaften, Ritterburgen, historisch, topographisch, malerisch. Heriot, Koblenz, 1831 Get up at least once to watch the sunrise! Remember to wear warm clothes as it can be chilly as the mist rises up from the river and the sun peeks over the hills to wake up all the birds along the banks. There are also yachting or sports marinas in the following places: Koblenz, Winningen, Brodenbach, Burgen, Löf, Hatzenport, Senheim, Treis, Traben-Trarbach, Kues, Neumagen, Pölich, Schweich, Trier and Konz. The Moselle is linked near Toul via the Canal de la Marne au Rhin with inter alia the Meuse, the Saône and the Rhône. Other canals link the river to the North Sea and even the Mediterranean. Zanoun, Louisa. "Language, Regional Identity and the Failure of the Left in the Moselle Département, 1871-1936." European History Quarterly 41.2 (2011): 231–254. Moselle’s key defining feature is the customisable front lounge - the freestanding sofa, armchair, and TV cabinet, along with TV points at both sides of the room, allow you to choose the position of the furniture to enjoy the best scenic view from your chosen plot.

After a delicious lunch we glide into our moorings at Cochem, the traditional centre of the Moselle wine trade, for an afternoon guided tour. Dominating the scene is a multi-turreted castle crowning a vineyard covered hillside, but Cochem’s real charm is its jumble of narrow streets lined with pastel-coloured buildings and peppered with quirky shops and wine cellars. Heinz Held: Die Mosel von der Mündung bei Koblenz bis zur Quelle in den Vogesen: Landschaft, Kultur, Geschichte (DuMont-Kunst-Reiseführer). 3rd edition, Cologne, 1989

Keep your noise to a minimum and don’t shout. This prevents unwanted attention from reporting eyes, if you are not making too much noise and keeping the night time noise to a minimum then you should not have any dramas. Bright lamps at night combined with the indicator volume turned to the max, is a sure way to give your position away. A small head torch is more than adequate for any night sessions. Moselle ( French pronunciation: [mɔzɛl] ⓘ) is the most populous department in Lorraine, in the northeast of France, and is named after the river Moselle, a tributary of the Rhine, which flows through the western part of the department. It had a population of 1,046,543 in 2019. [3] Inhabitants of the department are known as Mosellans. The section of the Moselle from the France– Germany– Luxembourg tripoint near Schengen to its confluence with the Saar near Konz shortly before Trier is in Germany known (geographically incorrectly [ citation needed]) as the Upper Moselle. The section from Trier to Pünderich is the Middle Moselle, the section between Pünderich and its mouth in Koblenz as the Lower Moselle or Terraced Moselle ( Terrassenmosel). Characteristic of the Middle and Lower Moselle are its wide meanders cut deeply into the highlands of the Rhenish Massif, the most striking of which is the Cochemer Krampen between Bremm and Cochem. Also typical are its vineyard terraces. Available as a two or three bedroom model, the Moselle has a king size double bed in the master bedroom with lift up storage (4'6" in 3 bed model) and two single beds in the twin room(s). Duvalay mattresses are supplied for extra comfort. All bedrooms have padded headboards, reading lights and plenty of storage. The United States Army liberated Moselle from Nazi Germany in the Battle of Metz in September 1944, although combat continued in the northeastern part of the department until March 1945. Moselle was returned to French governance in 1945 with the same frontiers as in 1919.

The wine industry on the German Moselle has been declining for decades. In 2005, statistics showed there were 10,375ha (25,640 acres) of vineyard; by 2012 this had fallen to just 8,491ha (20,980 acres). [22] The vineyards that have fallen fallow are mostly those on extremely steep hillsides. There has been a major decline in the number of so-called Nebenerwerbswinzer (vintners for whom it is a secondary occupation), and the small, family farming operations that, until the end of the 1960s formed the majority of wine businesses. Comparative figures by the Chamber of Agriculture for Rhineland-Palatinate for several wine villages on the Lower Moselle show that there were still 797 wine businesses in the early 1960s, but by the early 2000s there were only just under 100. Vertical blinds with partial curtains are supplied in the lounge and there is provision for a TV over the fireplace (up to 32") and Sky+ connection to the cabinet. The kitchen is fitted with quality appliances including a Thetford Cocina glass-fronted oven and grill, four-burner gas hob, cooker extractor, fridge freezer and integrated microwave. After lunch, we join a local guide for an informative tour of the city, with time to explore its tree-lined squares and perhaps visit one of its traditional bars, many of which still brew their own beer.
