About this deal

Both the Fast & Furious and Mission: Impossible films have defied expectations over the years, as each new installment only seems to improve upon its predecessor. But whereas the Furious entries can function as standalone popcorn actioners hellbent at marveling moviegoers with insane vehicular mayhem, the Impossiblefranchise is a smartly-crafted interconnected series that grows and advances with its central hero, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). While also astounding audiences with plenty of stunning visual spectacle and astonishing feats of daredevilry, every new sequel expands on the character's mythos, showing that he and his allies live in a larger universe that affects his personality and decisions. Action sequences are a direct result of his choices, the outcome of a decisiveness that has potentially been influenced by the events of the movies which have preceded it. And it's with this in mind that makes the Mission: Impossible series so entertaining, watching a talented, astute and otherwise sensible individual afflicted by years of sacrifice, conscious of the impact his choices have had on his personal life, as well as the world around him.

The colour scheme is problematic for a number of reasons, with the film looking darker than it was theatrically and thus making Dolby Vision work overtime to pull the shadow detail to the fore. This mostly works, but it's still not quite perfect - when it really should be - and even the peak whites struggle in some of the scenes to avoid being fully overblown. Grain gives the feature a suitably filmic texture, but also won't please viewers who like their features to look very glossy and 'clean'. And, unfortunately, also doesn't quite marry up during the IMAX scenes, which are flawless. The 12-bit Dolby Vision colors are a great improvement over the Blu-ray as well. Whites are more intense and clean, flesh tones are far more balanced, As you would perhaps only expect from a Woo Hollywood production, this is a really vibrant film, and the colour enhancements here only make it even more eye-burningly spectacular, bringing added depth to almost every single tone, and making the palette positively pop. I already owned Mission: Impossible in HDX (1080p) on Vudu but I figured I would try to upgrade MI:1 to Digital 4K (UHD) on iTunes. Unfortunately, the iTunes code does not provide a Digital 4k version, even though Apple supports 4k HDR with Dolby Vision as provided on the disc. [ Update: Upon release date of the 4k Blu-ray the digital code now redeems to Digital 4k with Dolby Vision. Woohoo!] improvement but one that's about as perfect as the 4K format, and some of this film's own source limitations, allow. Brian De Palma andfilm's end offers a very impressive sense of whooshing weight and movement that, combined with the music, delivers a substantial and very Effects make an impact too, with De Palma's attention to aural detail accentuating the nuances, which are given superior and discrete dissemination across the surrounds, levelling with a nice underlay of LFE punch. Mission: Impossible on 4k Blu-ray was viewed on a 65” Samsung SUHD 4k/HDR TV sourced from a Samsung Ultra HD Blu-ray disc player. Dynamic contrast was set to medium, colors natural, and Picture Mode on “Film” as we always suggest. Audio system is a 7.1.1 channel Samsung T500 soundbar. “Mission: Impossible” (1996) The Video The Ghost Protocol 4K release has a hard task besting that, but does so with flying colours, and makes for utter demo and reference material on the still niche format, with staggering detail and fabulous colours. The film, which you likely thought could never look any better, looks better than ever before. The break-in at the American embassy in Prague is still one of the riveting scenes in MI’s film history: you don’t know who to trust, who’s going to die, and which characters are involved in the “ambush” of the MI mission. This opening scene is true to the action/thriller genre and doesn’t rely on any expensive special effects to make it work.

Some of you will recall that we recently mentioned that Mill Creek is releasing The Event: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on 6/6. Well, Universal is also releasing La Brea: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray that same day. Although Fallout will mark the first time that a director has returned to do a second film in the franchise, it's not the first time they tried to make it happen, with both the third and fourth instalments originally set to be directed by J.J. Abrams. The continuation here, though, is not just in terms of director and likely style, but also narrative. And it's great news, because, after Rogue Nation, everybody wanted more. If you haven’t watched Mission: Impossible in a while it’s a great time to get refreshed before the premiere of MI:6 ‘Fallout’ hitting theaters on June 27th. And, why not watch it in spectacular 4k? Paramount has released the quasi-classic Tom Cruise Action film 'Mission: Impossible' to the UHD format. The disc replaces an aging Blu-ray which first released in 2007 with an MPEG-2 video encode and DolbyOriginally shot in 35mm at 2.39:1, MI:1 is considered “real 4k” because it was mastered in 4k, even though the special effects were rendered in 2k then upscaled. The mastering of MI films varies according to title, making it a bit confusing which 4k Blu-rays are actually from 4k sources, but MI:I (1996), MI:4 (2011) and MI:6 (2018) were all mastered in 4k. The 4k Blu-rays will hit stores not all at once, but in pairs, starting on June 27 with Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible 2.
