Description

One of the primary objectives FujiFilm set out to achieve in this series was to make the camera appealing to SLR users looking for an affordable and versatile digital alternative. They've achieved this, not just in the shape and build of the camera housing, but also in the layout of the controls. FujiFilm has always scored highly when it comes to intuitive design and the S5600 is no exception. The lens on the S5600 is much better than on its predecessor the S5500, and produces no distortion at the widest setting. The FinePix S5200 Zoom features a high-speed start up time of just 1.1 seconds and shutter lag has been minimised to 0.01 seconds. This, combined with a new automatic pop-up flash, means that you’ll never miss out on the action. This is my second Fujifilm camera and I am more than happy with it. It feels very good and snug in the hand and is very straightforward to use. I like the option of the viewfinder although the screen is good and has a brightness control. The resulting pictures are of high quality and indoor use has been particularly good. The zoom is quite exceptional and transforms nature photography. There are also a number of other features that would normally come only on a camera costing considerably more. The S5600 has both an LCD monitor and an LCD viewfinder. Due to the restricted space the monitor is only 1.8in with 115k pixels, which is slightly larger than the screen on the S5500, but with the same fairly low resolution. Its surface is quite reflective, and despite the one-touch monitor brightness control it is very difficult to see in bright daylight. Unfortunately the electronic viewfinder is also 115k pixels, which isn’t really high enough resolution in my opinion. It appears to be the same viewfinder used on the S5500. It would have been nice if it could have been fitted with something similar to the larger and much sharper 235kp LCD viewfinder found on the S9500.

This was shot at 200 ISO, giving a shutter speed of 1/160th, which with the camera’s superb handling is fast enough for this zoom shot. With a modern and clean interface, it is designed to be simple and intuitive for novice users. Many necessary functions located in the main window; that includes a few basic functions, such as adding photos, sorting, and printing. The editing functions are located in the main window which allows you to perform basic editing options such as cropping, resizing, and adjusting the brightness and contrast of a photo. Also worth noting that processing of RAW images from your device is the main point of using software like this without shelling out for expensive processing suites like Adobe Lightroom. At the lowest ISO setting the image quality is superb, with lots of fine detail, zero image noise and excellent colour and contrast. Overall, I would say this camera would appeal to someone with some basic experience of a point-and-shoot digital who would now like to take a few steps further into the field of photography. Overall picture quality is very good, although unusually for a Fujifilm camera I found the colours in standard mode to be a bit under-saturated, and the auto white balance produced a somewhat cold appearance in bright sunlight. An intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) system, which guides the user through the menu via a series of pop-up prompts, and an improved button layout, which mean the camera is easier than ever to navigate. Overall, our time with the FinePix S5600 was very pleasurable, and it performed well in terms of both handling and photographic results. Many of our test outings were in icy sub-zero conditions and we were impressed with the battery life, which had to battle with both the demands of the zoom lens and inclement weather. The camera's features were fairly impressive at launch including a 10x optical zoom, a 5.1-megapixel CCD imaging sensor as well as a host of manual settings. The only real problem with image quality is something that has plagued just about every Fuji camera I’ve ever seen: massive purple fringing along the left-hand edge of every bright highlight. It is annoying, and robs the S5600 of the superb image quality of which it is otherwise capable. Fujifilm has today announced the third incarnation of its S series, the FinePix S5200 Zoom (US) S5600 Zoom (Europe). The 5.1 megapixel mini SLR-style camera boasts a 10x optical zoom and Anti Blur mode which is, Fujifilm says, more effective than image stabilization, ISO up to 1600 and a 5th generation of Super CCD HR sensor. It also offers full manual control, VGA movie mode and RAW image capture. The FinePix S5200 will be available in September. The integrated Fujinon lens also means users will never have to contend with dust on the sensor or need to invest in more equipment. The lens itself is more compact than its predecessor’s, but retains the flexible zoom range from wide angle to telephoto, enabling users to shoot from distance or close up. A fixed lens housing also ensures fast start-up time of just 1.1 seconds, so the moment will never be missed. Power source options: 4 x AA-size Alkaline batteries, 4 x AA-size NiMH batteries (not included, sold separately), AC Power Adapter AC-5VX (not included, sold separately)
