About this deal

This toilet brush doesn’t look like your ordinary toilet brush. Rather than bristles, this eco-friendly toilet brush has scrub heads made from coconut husks that are gentle yet abrasive enough to scrub away toilet grime.

Nexus Freestanding Bathroom Curved Toilet Brush and Holder

We observed how well the brush was able to reach within the toilet and under the rim. For brushes with multiple heads, we each head to see which ones worked best. For electric models, we recorded the total runtime for cleaning. We noted how much and where clay mask residue was left in the toilet bowl with each brush. We tested 16 toilet brushes at our lab in Des Moines, Iowa. We started by placing the brush in their included storage containers (where applicable) and bumped into them several times, noting if they tipped over or were sturdy enough to stay upright. There’s nothing worse than scrubbing away at stubborn stains and obscured rims on the toilet bowl, especially when you don’t have the best toilet brush for the job. Sometimes, no amount of toilet cleaner or bleach can save you from this fate, especially if you live in an area with particularly hard water that’s prone to limescale. The head can be replaced if it discolours or rusts, and the drip tray allows water to evaporate from the bottom of the container, so no puddles are formed. Key details – Materials: Plastic; Dimensions: 37 x 9 x 9cm (HWD); Replaceable head? Yes; Mounting style: Free standingTo find the best toilet brushes to clean your toilet bowl, our Cleaning Lab experts researched the most popular toilet brushes available to consumers — everything from traditional bristle brushes to silicone and biodegradable brushes made from coconut husks. As a result, silicone toilet brushes harbour fewer bacteria than a standard toilet brush when cleaned regularly. How often should you buy a new toilet brush? Overall, we found the Oxo easy to use, clean, and store. When storing it, we found it was completely dry after 24 hours with no odors or mildew. A curved handle might make it even easier to maneuver, particularly to get into the S trap of a toilet, but for cleaning inside the bowl, it’s quite effective. Some toilet brushes and their holders can be long, gangly contraptions, but not this one from Oxo. The slender handle is wider at the top for a comfortable grip, and the brush head fit into a compact orb of a self-closing container— the door flipped itself open and shut when we removed or replaced the toilet brush in the holder. The setup looked rather sturdy, but it did tip over when we nudged it, so be sure to store this in a corner where it can’t be overturned. The D-shaped head is designed to fit all areas of the toilet, and the handle is also shaped to make cleaning easy.

Toilet Brushes of 2023 - Reviews by Your Best Digs The 9 Best Toilet Brushes of 2023 - Reviews by Your Best Digs

The toilet brush was comfortable to hold, but because there was no contour to the handle, the grip felt a bit slippery. The brush itself fits nicely in the slot in the base, but there is a bit of a learning curve with remembering to press the button at the tip of the handle to remove it. We liked how easily it slipped into the container, which is weighted at the bottom to prevent tipping. The most hygienic way of cleaning a toilet is to use disinfecting spray or wipes, but please don’t flush the wipes down the loo after you’ve finished cleaning. The Clorox Toilet Wand Disposable Toilet Cleaning Kit wowed us with its performance and ease of use. We especially love that there was no cleanup—we simply discarded the scrub head when we finished cleaning. Durability: We tested durability by pressing the bristles into the toilet bowl as hard as possible to see if they warped. We approximated what might happen when you’re cleaning a particularly dirty toilet or what might happen to your toilet brush with continued use over time. For disposable brushes, we assessed the ease of changing the disposable pad. However, some users have found that the brush can loosen from the handle when reaching into the U-bend.Both of the holders have an inner and outer layer that allows the water to drain away from the brush so it remains dry. And the brush holder comes apart for easy cleaning. The Simplehuman Toilet Brush with Caddy was sturdy, but it was also quite uncomfortable to hold and difficult to maneuver during cleaning. It didn’t have an impressive performance either— we found it smeared the clay mask around rather than actually cleaning it. If you intend to use a disinfecting spray, use a cloth or sponge with it that you have dedicated to this task, keep it in the bathroom and reserve it for this special cleaning occasion! We think the Joseph Joseph Flex Plus is the best toilet brush to buy. It works well, is easy to keep clean and it even looks good too boot. Mumsnetters wax lyrical about this toilet brush, which is high praise indeed. How we chose our recommendations

Buying a spare head for your toilet brush works out a lot cheaper, and as long as the handle is still in good condition, it is perfectly fine to continue to use it. The included container seemed sturdy and while it did tip over when we nudged it with our toe during testing, it’s easy to stow in a corner where this is unlikely to happen. We did notice the brush was slightly damp and had a slight odor after drying, and there were a few drops of water in the container, which also had a slight smell. It’s probably best to let this air dry before storing, but there was no evidence of mold. Cleaning the toilet is no one’s favorite chore. We tested nine toilet brushes — both non-disposable and disposable — and brush-plunger combos and chose the SimpleHuman model as the best toilet brush because of its useful and clever design, cleaning power and mess-free storage. We also recommend the OXO – Good Grips, a hygienic budget option, and the best disposable toilet brush from Clorox makes cleaning the toilet and brush a mere minute-long process. Important features to consider

Are toilet brushes a good idea?

The toilet brush itself has a classic soft, square head offering plenty of surface area for easy cleaning.

During our testing, we found that the lightweight toilet brush had a long handle that was comfortable to grip and maneuver to reach all around the inside of the toilet. We loved how simple it was to connect and detach the brush heads. We did have to touch the clean one to firmly attach it to the brush handle, but we didn’t have to go near it after it had been used—we simply pressed the button to release the scrub head into the trash. This product’s innovative features make it an easy brush to use. In particular, the cover that opens and closes automatically is a popular feature amongst users. Brush head shape: Germs can get trapped and be forgotten under the rim of the toilet. Look for brushes with a rim cleaner or ones that have a shape that can easily be maneuvered to reach under the rim. Round, bristle and silicone brush heads were the easiest to maneuver in our tests. Cleaning with flat silicone brushes took a little more effort than we would like.Despite the powerful action of the durable bristles, we didn’t see any scratches, scuffs, or other damage to the bowl. The powerful silicone bristles would also be quite useful for cleaning grout and other bathroom surfaces—provided you use a different brush head, of course. We liked that the bristles felt barely damp after letting them dry for 24 hours—they smelled of plastic but not mildew. To further this, though, find a toilet brush holder that keeps the toilet brush off of the bottom of the holder. This ensures it isn’t sitting in the bacteria-filled pool at the bottom of the holder. Drip tray: Damp brushes are the worst for harbouring bacteria and bad smells, so having a stand that collects all the drips is integral for keeping your brush clean for as long as possible. So, the cleaning is very much taken care of, but the slimline holder looks excellent too. It provides a neat storage solution and a modern design element to your toilet.
