Plus, the parents apparently didn't give a fig that the kids were trying hard to set their own paths, Simon got a lot of hate because of his future plans. Gurdeep was a bit weird, I wonder if the girl herself noticed or not. :P I had a big laugh though how she grew up and turned out to be. One criticism I have of the book is that it’s aim is not at all clear. Around half way through there is a major plot twist and the story becomes much darker. There are many references to domestic abuse and we never find out the outcome of this. I feel the ending was a little abrupt and unexpected and I wanted a little more. The loose ends are especially disconcerting since this is mostly autobiographical and many events would be deeply traumatising! This book definitely lends itself to becoming a series as there are lots of characters’ stories which remain unfinished.

Review: Chinglish by Sue Cheung - Words on Words

First off, there might be some who might be offended by me poking fun of Chinglish. But really if anyone can empathize, it’s me. As someone who struggled with learning Chinese Mandarin for a couple of years, I understand just how different the two languages are — grammatically, tonally, and otherwise. Interesting Chinglish does not only appear because of differences in logic but also due to awkward lexical choices and grammatical errors. Read/Look/See/Watch/View— This is another example where you have one Chinese word (看), but English has several words to express this. These words all involve receiving input and images from the eyes, which then go to the brain. However, these words also involve some differences, which I will try to explain, with sample sentences for each. A. n. A mixture of Chinese and English; esp. a variety of English used by speakers of Chinese or in a bilingual Chinese and English context, typically incorporating some Chinese vocabulary or constructions, or English terms specific to a Chinese context. Also: the vocabulary of, or an individual word from, such a variety. Cf. Singlish n.2Mom didn’t want me to watch too much TV when I was a kid, so she would make me go outside to play some. (Note: we usually say “watch TV” but “see a movie.”)
