About this deal

Naïve Newcomer: He just moved to his maternal grandparents' home for a year while his father is in a business trip at India. He has never been in Yomiyama since he was a child and knows nothing about the rules and dark secrets of his new school, particularly the class 3-3 where he's assigned. Letting Her Hair Down: Played straight in the manga where she only wears her hair loose outside of her job. Inverted in the anime. Adoption Angst: Implied in the anime, but it's elaborated more in the manga. At two years old, Mei was adopted by her aunt Yukiyo after the latter had a stillbirth. While it's not that they don't get along, Mei knows Yukiyo never moved on from her stillbirth. Mei tells Kouichi that she's just another "doll" or "replacement" to her aunt since she cannot ever fill the void in her heart caused by the loss of her true child.

Magical Eye: Her Doll's eye can see the "color of death" on dead people or people that are about to die.Ikuo Takabayashi never appeared in the manga, he is only mentioned. Also, Aya Ayano and Makoto Ouji are anime-only characters. They never appeared in the manga. Her name, Misaki, is the same as Misaki Fujioka. But the "Misaki" in "Mei Misaki" is a surname and the "Misaki" in " Misaki Fujioka" is a given name. This confused Takako, who knew Misaki but dismembered and thought she'd known Mei. Brutal Honesty: Even though Izumi is dying in front of him and asks if he remembers their first meeting, instead of lying and letting her die happy, Kouichi just says 'no'. Izumi even lampshades this trope before she dies. In the original novel, the doll that Mei brings to the morgue was a gift to Misaki after her kidney transplant. The kidney Misaki received was not Mei's (due to minors not being allowed to donate). Misaki told Mei which doll she wanted but died before Mei could bring it to the hospital. I don't dislike rain. My favourite is the cold rain that falls in midwinter, just before it turns into snow."

Mistaken for Murderer: When Takako dies trying to kill Mei, Mei takes the knife out of her hands, just as Izumi walks in. Izumi, upon seeing the knife in Mei's hand and Takako's corpse, instantly believes that not only is Mei the extra, but also thinks she stabbed and hung Takako. Gender Flip: In the live-action movie, Misaki was apparently a girl, since an Annabelle doll was used as a stand-in for her. Ryoko Akiyama - Reiko's best friend from the time when she was in 9th Grade Class 3 in 1983. She dies in an accident because of the curse. She never appears in the anime.Heroic BSoD: After seeing Junta Nakao die, he fully remembers the tape he left in the classroom and suffers this. Sentai Filmworks Licenses Horror TV Anime Another". Another friend of Izumi, a quiet young woman who gets specially affected and broken by the Calamity.

Another

Kazuma Akazawa - Akazawa's older brother. He was mentally unstable and committed suicide in the manga. He never appeared in the anime, he is just mentioned.

Blemished Beauty: Mei lost her left eye due to a tumor when she was a child. Her mother gave her a doll's eye as a prosthetic and made it green, unlike Mei's real red eye, because she thought it would look nice. Mei prefers to wear an eyepatch over her doll's eye, but she's still fairly attractive. Dramatic Irony: The core tragedy of the first two-thirds of Another 2001 revolves around how the audience knows Izumi is that year's casualty... and she clearly has no idea. She is fascinated by a pair of conjoined dolls in her grandmother's shop, wondering how they can be so calm even though they are attached. When Kouichi Sakakibara suggests that is the reason, Mei claims that that's impossible. She also claims that, in the end, everyone is alone, no matter how many bonds they may have. However, despite telling Kouichi to stay away from her, as time goes on, she becomes accustomed to his presence and doesn't seem to mind having him around. She even seems to develop feelings for him, as she was deeply touched by him standing up for her when Izumi Akazawa blamed her for the Curse, despite both Naoya Teshigawara and Yuuya Mochizuki standing up for her as well. This is further implied when it's revealed that she had figured out who the Extra student was some time before the school trip, but kept it a secret because she didn't want Kouichi to be sad, a decision she ultimately comes to regret.

Because his father is working abroad, Kōichi Sakakibara moves to his birth town of Yomiyama to live with his grandparents and his aunt Reiko Mikami, where he spends the first month hospitalized due to a pneumothorax. His classmates, Izumi Akazawa, Tomohiko Kazami and Yukari Sakuragi, visit him but act strange. In the hospital, Kōichi meets an uncanny girl, Mei Misaki. Once he recovers, he attends school, where Mei says that their class, Class 9-3, is close to death. Adaptational Villainy: The anime turns her villainous by making her try to kill Mei when Takako claims that Mei is the extra. Named by the Adaptation: While present in the novel, she's only ever referred to by her surname. Her given name is only ever stated in the anime. They are later seen at the Mikami family grave together on a sunny, warm day. The grave lists both Ritsuko, Kouichi's mother, and Reiko as deceased. Kouichi and Mei then talk about how they are the only ones to remember Mikami-sensei. They are also the only ones able to see her in the photo they took outside of the inn. Kouichi and Mei walk together, Kouichi asking why she doesn't answer her phone when he calls. Mei tells him that after the incident at the inn she threw her phone into the river because she hates those devices. She also mentions that her mother will without a doubt get her a new cell phone soon. Kouichi then asks if he may call her sometimes when she gets her new phone. She smiles and replies, "Sure." Then Kouchi asks if it is all over, with all the senseless death and Mei responds with a reassuring smile. When You Coming Home, Dad?: Her father apparently spends most of his time abroad and Mei isn't even sure what he does. Not that she cares.
