About this deal

The boys’ lessons continue, although Merlyn pays more attention to The Wart. Kay is envious of this attention, and The Wart begs Merlyn to give Kay an adventure too. In one of their excursions, they meet Little John, who leads them to “Robin Wood” and Marian. They stay with Robin for a long time, and eventually meet a griffin, whom Kay kills, taking its head as a trophy. During the fight, the griffin breaks The Wart’s collar bone.

All we need is one knight who is so strong he can pull that sword from the stone. Then we will have a king again, at last!”

I think that this story is trying to say that just because you’re not strong doesn’t mean that your heart can’t be strong and it’s not always about the muscles it’s about your heart and what it can be strong about. Yet far away, there was a quiet place. A good knight, Sir Ector, lived in peace with his two sons. His first son was named Kay. His younger son Arthur had been adopted as a baby. Years before, a stranger had come to Sir Ector with a baby. He asked if Sir Ector would raise the child. The old knight took the baby in his arms, glad for a second child. He named the baby Arthur, and raised the child as his own. Right away,” said Arthur. But where was it? Arthur looked around in panic. Kay’s spear, battle-axe, and dagger were right where they should be. But no sword. “Kay…” he said, “how about a battle-axe?” Later, they practice jousting and Wart bemoans the fact that he will never become a knight. Following this, King Pellinore arrives and tilts against Grunmore Grummerson, a knight in the service of Ector. Pellinore loses and the match devolves into a brawl. After this, on a dreary day, Wart decides he wants to become a hawk, which Merlyn allows him to do. He runs into Cully, Kay's falcon, in a group of militaristic falcons and is forced to demonstrate bravery to them. He succeeds and is celebrated with a song from the company. A young boy named Wart, being fostered in the home of Sir Ector, finds himself being tutored by the wizard Merlyn in this classic treatment of the youth of King Arthur. Transformed into various different creatures during the course of his education - a fish, a hawk, an ant, a goose and a badger - Wart learns about the nature of power and of warfare, and is taught to question the issues of fairness and justice. Unbeknownst to him, he is in training for his future as a king, and the book ends at the tournament in London, where the future monarch will be revealed by his ability to pull the sword from its stone...I am glad that I read this classic and I want to finish the Once and future King. There is a lot going on here and much of it is the myth of King Arthur. I feel like this was written for a different time and when it was written it revolutionized the Arthurian Myth.
