The Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro’s modular system is easily the most catchy part of this pad, and the obvious reason to buy instead of an Xbox Elite pad, Razer Wolverine or Scuf Prestige. Open the Microsoft Store, search for ThrustmapperX and install the software on your PC, or else visit: Thrustmaster’s included one is decent, but we’re not convinced it’s better than (or even perhaps as good as) the Xbox One pad for those thumb-rolling Hadouken gestures. And Microsoft improved the Xbox Series pad in this regard for the Series X and Series S. We are also not huge fans of the rear controls, one of the mainstays of ultra-expensive pads like the Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro. The Xbox Elite Controller uses removable paddles, which put these controls right where you want them to be.

And if you’re on the lookout for a new controller or an upgrade, the excellent news is that nowadays it’s easier than ever to play with a controller on PC. Many now support seamless plug-and-play connectivity, and there’s more choice than ever ranging from feature-filled premium pads to value-busting controllers that punch above their weight. Measuring 6.09 x 4.72 x 2.63 inches (WLH), the overall build is a little larger than the Xbox Series X controller, but it specifically has much longer handles, not unli-ke a PlayStation controller. That makes sense, as the original Eswap Pro was made for the PS4, and its design seems to be heavily based on the Astro C40 TR, another modular controller also designed for the PS4. The big chassis is a boon, handles and all. It fits well and fills your hands when you grab it, so there’s no need to grip tightly. Your fingertips have plenty of room to post up at the base of the handles, giving you easy access to the rear buttons. And though that bigger frame and the modular parts add some mass – the Eswap X Pro weighs 329 grams, versus the Series X controller’s 287 grams – the well-balanced Eswap X Pro makes that heft feel like a comfort rather than a burden. You have access to an incredible amount of control through the app. For example, in the “vibrations'' sections, you can independently adjust the haptics in the trigger and handles on each side. The trigger menu allows you to control the initial and final actuation point on each trigger. These distinctions can get very subtle, verging on overkill, when you get into making granular changes, but it’s much more control than you’ll get with most controllers, which is a good thing nonetheless.

Don’t get us wrong, it is no match for a full race wheel set-up and if you’re really serious about shaving the milliseconds or hitting the apexes, then we’d most definitely point you to the way of the Thrustmaster T248 Wheel or T128 Wheel. But if you don’t want to get that involved, this could still be a fun little way of playing. All in all, this is a terrific PC pad, and one that balances value, performance, battery life, and durability. Given you can get a whole host of colours and even design your own via the Xbox Design Lab, you also have a huge range of personalisation options. These include an awesome level of customization whether you play on PC or console, additional rear buttons and adjustable triggers.
