About this deal

From the latest Scandinavian serial killer to Golden Age detective stories, we love our crime novels!

The Book Club Murders (Oakwood Mystery, book 1) by Leslie Nagel

Overall, a well crafted murder mystery to keep readers thinking. Charley is a heroine readers will love and want to read more about. I know I do. I’m looking forward to more books in this new series.

I absolutely loved this book! The story is expertly crafted, with a captivating plot and relatable characters. The main character Izzy had a chronic illness that I appreciated being represented and one of the characters transitioned from male to female which I feel is underrepresented in books so it was lovely to have a character going through that.

Thursday Murder Club: (The Thursday Murder Club 1) The Thursday Murder Club: (The Thursday Murder Club 1)

I loved the idea of the book club, the killing of the members of that club, the murders imitating murders from mystery novels, all this in a lovely town. The only down part was: too many characters. For a while I was so confused, mixing the names of the club members and who was whose’s husband🤦‍♀️… But I was right on the killer’s identity – yay👌! Izzy flees from her controlling boyfriend, Adam, and moves into her late aunt’s house. Adam is hot on her tail and won’t leave her alone. The author knows his locational setting well, and it shows! The description of Dun Laoghaire, its culture, its small town vibe, the Gardai, the library – every tiny detail connected to the Irish town serves to add a layer of authenticity to the proceedings, no matter how wild the ride gets.

Success!

I enjoyed reading The Book Club Murders. I loved Leslie Nagle portrayal of her characters especially Charley Carpenter as a modern Miss Marple. Leslie Nagel does a great job of entwining her characters throughout The Book Club Murders. I like Leslie Nagle writing style that makes her readers laugh and cry while reading The Book Club Murders. The Book Club Murders is the first book I have read of Leslie Nagel, and Leslie has ensured that I read the next book in this series The Antique House Murders. I also, enjoy the way Leslie Nagel describes her setting and the plots. The way Leslie Nagel wrote The Book Club Murders, I never guess who the murder was.

I’m so glad I’m not a member of this book club. I don’t think they ever get round to discussing the books. Too busy with the local gossip. And that’s before things get really serious. We only talk about crime novels and serial killer thrillers at any book club I belong to. We don’t act them out for real – thankfully. At least I don’t. The second thing that irked me was how unrealistic it is the heroine was so highly praised by the police force, especially Marc and his partner. In most cozies people don't sit in admiration of amateur sleuths. She didn't have a genius IQ and I figured out a lot of what she did - the only question remains, what's with these poor cops and actual detectives? It was unrealistic how much Marc let her in on the investigation too - there are laws forbidding some of that, after all.My thanks to Zooloo’s Book Tours and author Alan Gorevan for a complimentary copy of “The Book Club Murders”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. I had expected the book club to pay a greater role in the plotline. ( A part of me had expected a closed-door mystery where the members of a book club are rounded up by a book-hating maniac, or maybe by someone who hated the book chosen for discussion. Wouldn’t that have been something!? 😄) However, there’s only one scene set during an actual book club meeting, which was entertaining, no doubt. The references to books are also limited only to the start. So what I got was good, but I wanted far more, considering the title. A group of pensioners (Elizabeth Best; Ron Ritchie; Joyce Meadowcroft; and Ibrahim Arif) [1] set about solving the mystery of the murder of a property developer [2] in the luxurious Cooper's Chase retirement village near the fictitious village of Fairhaven in Kent. Tuesday Club Murders: Miss Marple’s Thirteen Problems The Tuesday Club Murders: Miss Marple’s Thirteen Problems

This book is more than a cozy mystery. It’s a romantic suspense and cozy mystery combo. Traditionally cozy mysteries are sweet…no violence, no sex and no foul language. While this book doesn’t have strong violence or sex, there is some language that might bother some. I was okay with it and it fit into the story, but I thought I’d mention it in case some are bothered by that kind of thing. Well this book club is unlike any book club I have ever attended thank goodness. A brilliant, dark, psychological thriller by an author I have not come across before , although how I missed Alan Gorevan I do not know. We have a bit of everything here. The worst type of coercive control and abuse, a murder mystery or maybe two or three, maybe a budding romance, this was certainly a read in one sitting. All of the suspects ... women who are rich, snobbish, witchy ... are described to a T. Since they all are hiding secrets, it was impossible to guess who dun it.

I found this book to be thrilling and set a new pace to a coach series. Charley is my new favorite protagonist and the Agatha's book club is a group I would join even with murder swirling around. I personally liked that the murders were tied in with a variety of novels that the group read. I also loved how the romance/heat between Charley and Marc was instant but one they both feared.
