About this deal

During the course of my test, I used full-finger gloves inside my pogies that are normally only warm enough down into the 40s. However, with the pogies, I rode in temps down into the teens, including riding into a brutal headwind whipping down off the Sawatch mountain range. During the entirety of my test, my hands stayed warm and toasty inside the Mitts. Cycling Weekly's North American Editor, Anne-Marije Rook is old school. She holds a degree in journalism and started out as a newspaper reporter — in print! She can even be seen bringing a pen and notepad to the press conference. It just does not make a lot of sense to go around without any type of protection whatsoever. Even in milder weather, they can come in handy so that the hands and fingers do not get colder than they should. That’s right, sometimes it just gets cold enough that your hands need a little extra help staying warm, and for that, we turn to gloves that provide their own heat. We’ve known riders brave enough to wear these 100% wind- and waterproof cycling gloves in temps as low as -40 and return with still-functioning fingers.

Bar Mitts EXTREME Cold Weather Mountain/Commuter Bike

The criminal trial for the murder of cyclist Moriah Wilson that has gripped the nation and cycling world alike gets underway in Austin, Texas, today. I first tried the Bar Mitts on a 200-km brevet wearing wool liner gloves under the Bar Mitts. At the start, my hands were comfortable in the 35F (2C) temperature. As the temperature rose above 40F (4.5C), my hands started to feel too warm, so I partially opened the side zippers of the Mitts. Most people will make sure always to use them if there is snow on the ground, because not only is the temperature low, but the moisture can cause problems as well.On one ride, I rode four hours in the rain with temperatures in the high 30s and lower 40s. The neoprene material of the Bar Mitts kept the rain and wind off my hands, so I believe that my hands were much warmer than they would have been in gloves alone. And most of all, I really liked being able to use my hands to grab food or my camera without first having to pull off a big glove and hold it in my teeth. Braking and Shifting Not Ideal In All Bar Positions Givi makes quality gear, and this no exception. A good choice for anyone with large hands and/or bulky gloves. With a Cycling Weekly subscription you can improve your performance with our expert practical, nutritional and training tips As for the Bar Mitts specifically, I found their construction to be durable, reliable, and the installation and ease of use to be top-notch. While perhaps you could find lighter or more stylish pogies from a different brand, it’d be tough to improve upon the utility and functionality that the Bar Mitts provide.

Bar Mitts Cold Weather Mountain/Commuter Bike Neoprene

Originally created in 1974 by a kayaker named Billy Nutt to stay warm while boating, pogies look roughly like T-shaped pouches, each with a large opening for the wrist and smaller openings on either side of the fist for each end of a kayak paddle. Pogies get their name from a local baitfish. This depends on the set you buy, but most share similar principles. Mirrors are a common way to hold the muffs in place, either by securing a strap around them or removing the mirrors and poking the mirror through a hole in the muff. They are a little thinner than some of the other options, and the materials are not quite as warm. However, some people like the fact that they are pretty thin and easy to use, and the price is impossible to be. As the cheapest option of them all in this article, some people will benefit from these bike mitts to use for any type of bike out there. I distinctly remember this lesson from 20+ years ago when during my first winter riding, no amount of thermal liners or windproof gloves could keep my hands from turning into stiff, frozen crab’s claws by the end of the commute. There are even specific models available even for bullhorn bars, flat, mustache, townie or butterfly bars Waterproofing is not as important as you might think. Your gloves are (probably) already waterproof, and it’s the insulation and reduction of windchill that help keep you warm in muffs. That said, if money is not an issue, buying a waterproof option will keep you warmer in the very worst of conditions. There is enough room to put some of the essentials like a phone, CO2 pump, wallet, or other riding supplies. Material: Outer layer – 50% leather, 46% polyester, 4% elastane; Middle layer – 100% polyurethane; Inner layer – 92% polyester, 8% aluminum; Insulation – PrimaLoft Gold Riders are capable of staying warm even in -30° weather if they want to enjoy all the benefits of riding in the snow. When the hands are inside these mittens, it does not affect a person at all.
