The evidence suggests that women having their first baby, women 30 years and older and women who have had episiotomies before, can particularly benefit from perineal massage. Perineal massage can also be beneficial to women who are planning a first vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC). Perineal massage can reduce the risk of perineal tears and prepare for the sensations of burning and stinging during birth. It can also reduce the likelihood of needing to have an episiotomy.

Regular perineal massage is a good method to add to your toolbox as you prepare for labor and delivery. While massage doesn’t guarantee you’ll not tear or need other procedures, like episiotomy or stitches, it can help you demystify some of the sensations you might feel as your baby enters the world. Also, using these common oils has been shown to increase the risk of vaginal infection. Clinical studies have also found that some of the recommended oils, such as almond oil, can increase the risk for preterm labor. So, let’s steer clear of that, k?Use additive-free unscented perineal massage oils such as sweet almond oil or olive oil to avoid irritation and ensure smooth movements.

As you or your partner perform the massage, apply steady pressure downwards towards your bottom until you feel a tingling sensation. This will help you recognise the feeling that you will have when your baby’s head begins to come out of your vagina (crowning). Perform the massage in a comfortable and relaxed position such as lying down or in a semi-inclined position. We have answers to all your questions, plus a step-by-step guide, diagrams, charts, recommended oils, and even a forthcoming video to give you all the details you need about how to do perineal massage!
