About this deal

Typically at our monthly Guys Game Night we play a few different games during an evening. This month however, Deception ended up being the only game we played with the 8-person group. The player receiving the Forensic Scientist card reveals; their identity and acts as the game master. They discard their Clue and Means cards and will play using the Scene tiles instead. All the other players keep their roles secret. They have no way of knowing which is the Murderer and which is the Accomplice and they do not know how the crime was committed. If one of the Investigators solves the case, all the Investigators, Witness, and Forensic Scientist win. The crime takes place first. The forensic scientist will read from the script in the instruction manual and inform all players to close their eyes. Then they will tell the murderer and the accomplice if there is one this game, to open their eyes.

During this portion of the game, the Murderer will select the solution to the crime by identifying the "Means of Murder" and "Key Evidence". The Forensic Scientist should run this portion of the game by following these steps: The city also saw a rise in child abuse cases which stood at 245, a 29 per cent increase, while cases involving sexual and physical abuse of minors also saw a 43 per cent and 17 per cent climb, respectively. Other than the Forensic Scientist, every player, including the Murderer (and the Accomplice) can make one single attempt to "Solve the Crime" at any time during the game. To try to solve the crime, a player should announce, "Let me Solve the Crime!" That player then points to one Clue card and one Means card in front of another player. The forensic scientist can take as much or as little time as they would like to place the markers on the tiles, and as soon as the first one is placed all investigators may start discussing thoughts about the evidence. Once the sixth marker is placed though, this stage of the round is over. Investigators are given a few moments more to discuss then the next stage begins. Presentation To solve the crime, the Investigators must analyze the hints given by the Forensic Scientist. As long as one of the Investigators correctly identifies both the “Key Evidence” and “Means of Murder,” the Murderer is arrested and the Investigators win the game (as does the Forensic Scientist). The graphics on the Clue and Means Cards are for reference only. Players should use their imagination based on the texts. 2. Roles We love the unique game play of deducing a pair of cards from vague clues given by the Forensic Scientist.

Other than that, Deception has made a permanent home in our game closet. What could these clues possibly mean? In Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, each player first receives a secret role: Forensic Scientist, Witness, Investigator, Murderer, or Accomplice. Everyone then closes their eyes except for the forensic scientist, who instructs the murderer to open his eyes. The murderer does so, revealing himself to the scientist, and he points to one of the five murder weapons in front of them and one of their five pieces of evidence. [8] When an Investigator does that successfully, the crime is solved and the Forensic Scientist and the Investigators win the game.to 12-player game: 1 Murderer, 1 Forensic Scientist, 1 Accomplice (optional), 1 Witness (optional), all remaining: Investigators The forensic scientist will then discard their clue and means cards and take the evidence tiles and shuffle them leaving the green and purple ones off to the side. The remaining tiles will be face down in a pile next to the forensic scientist. They will also get the rule book to read from the script provided. Badge Tokens

A crime scene is a location where a crime has been committed. It is usually the place where the body is found, or where the crime took place. It can also be the place where the suspect was found or where the suspect was last seen. Accusations can be made during any time of the investigation by using the badge token. Look at Solving the Crime for more information. Investigation The Forensic Scientist then gives the Lab Technician a thumbs up if the card selected was the Clue or Means card used in the murder and a thumbs down if it was not. The Witness is an optional role when playing with six or more players.* The Witness is an Investigator who has witnessed the culprits leaving the crime scene. They have no way of knowing which is the Murderer and which is the Accomplice and they do not know how the crime was committed. This continues for three rounds. If the crime has not been solved by the end (see next section), the Murderer wins. Solving The CrimeMost notable, though, are the three new role cards: the Lab Technician, Protective Detail, and the Inside Man. The flow of the game remains the same, but players now have new powers, which can greatly up the angst in the room.

As far as player count goes, we’ve enjoyed the game as much with 4 as we have with 9. With only 4 players it’s very difficult for the Murderer to escape. And with more players we love having an Accomplice and Witness in the game. Social deduction games can be a little confusing for those new to the game. And, by their very nature, can be quite difficult to teach ‘as you go along’, as if anyone reveals their identity, the game is ruined. The Forensic Scientist then discards their Means and Clue cards, and instead takes out the Scene tiles, along with the six bullet markers. They place the Cause of Death and one Location Scene tile in front of them, then do the same with four other random Scene tiles. Finally, each Investigator should take a Badge token and put it in front of them. This tells everyone that they have not yet tried to solve the crime. Committing The Crime Players should take a moment to look at everyone’s means and clue cards, bit any art on the cards is for reference and only the text should influence investigators thought and opinions. RolesDeception: Murder in Hong Kong ( designed by Tobey Ho) is a social deduction game for 4-12 players. The narrative involves investigators trying to solve a murder. One player acts as the forensic scientist giving clues using a series of scene tiles, and investigators must try to interpret them. Sounds simple enough, but hiding among this band of investigators is the murderer, who must manipulate the discussion to try to move the blame away from themselves. Roles are randomly assigned, and there are fun additions of the witness and the accomplice who can make things even more interesting in larger groups. The group discussion and theorizing that underpins it can be extremely engaging, and especially rewarding for those that like to use their imagination.
