One big problem with these cheap waterproof ponchos is that they are not designed to last more than 1 or 2 times which is not good for the environment. The issue with using them for hiking is that they have no breathability and are incredibly flimsy much like a plastic bag you carry shopping in. If these were your two choices which would you bring: Sil-Nylon is a synthetic material made by impregnating a thin woven nylon fabric with liquid silicone from both sides. [silnylon] Woven nylon is used in all kinds of outdoor gear for its lightweight, durability, and ability to be manipulated for its purpose. The addition of silicone creates a watertight barrier with superior flexibility and only helps to increase the tear resistance. Sil-Nylon and Sil-Poly are typically used for things like dry bags, tarps, tents, and other ultralight outdoor gear. Polyester I once had a Ferrino Trekker, but it has a metallic lining inside and just putting it on made me start to sweat. Someone explained that the metallic lining is to prevent hypothermia, so it may be a fine winter poncho, but not for me and the camino.An upgraded version of the classic Sea To Summit Tarp-Poncho, but with ultra-light and compact silnylon construction. VERDICT: The Lightweight Ripstop Nylon Rain Poncho from Arcturus is super lightweight and secure. You don’t have to struggle with press studs or super wide sleeves, but that does make venting a little more difficult. Considering the price, this is an absolute bargain and so much more versatile than a raincoat. If your Decathlon poncho works in every respect other than the peeling seamguards, why not give it some repair/maintenance time? That's what winters are for... non? Wind Break: While a poncho without the liner does not have much insulating qualities, you will be warmer if you wrap up in the poncho in windy weather, this will help protect you from wind chill. We also love the simple yet effective snaps on both sides of the Ultra-Lite2. If you’re in a serious storm with rain-blown wind, these snaps allow you to snug the poncho up at your sides and armpits, providing the most secure barrier possible. When you’re in a lighter rain or scattered showers, you can leave as many snaps undone as you want for maximum ventilation. Train in the rain with your gear and get to know the strength and weakness. Improve your rain gear and try it out again on the next rain day,With the poncho removed, at each mark, take a piece of of Tenacious Tape (duct tape, etc.), about 2" in length or a bit longer, and wrap the tape so that it goes over the top and bottom sides of the edge and then extends at least 3/4" from the edge of the poncho. There may be nothing worse than walking on a cold rainy day and getting wet. We carry a little extra weight to alleviate that threat. We also carry nothing made out of cotton, but that’s a different subject.
