About this deal

If you spend a lot of time outdoors exploring, this is the kind of free face to have loaded up onto your Garmin. I won’t be listing every feature the Garmin Epix Pro offers here due to the fact we covered so much of it in our original Garmin Epix (Gen 2) review, but suffice to say there’s some new stuff on offer. Topographical maps features now offer real-time weather information, and updated heart rate sensors are said to increase accuracy thanks to a new set of “spacially diverse optical sensors”, meaning they can cover more of what’s happening beneath your skin to provide a more accurate picture of your heart rate.

Along with a boat that slowly moves across your face, you can see your step count along with the time, battery status, and whether you've got a Bluetooth connection to your paired smartphone. Garmin's Multi-Band (dual-frequency) GPS is still as good as anything we've ever tested - right alongside the Apple Watch Ultra - and one that we've been mightily impressed by during a couple of recent 10km races. For both of these new scores, though, we'd also note that it's still early days, and we expect things to progress over the next year or two. It's likely this could mark the arrival of Garmin's Elevate 5.0 technology, and potentially grow the list of Garmin devices with ECG functionality. Currently, only the Garmin Venu 2 Plus is able to offer the health feature. Next is Endurance scores and it’s a pretty self explanatory one. This is a score that wants to give you a number to indicate just how well tuned you are to maintain effort over long periods. VO2 Max is generally the barometer for this, and Garmin uses that metric and then looks at your workout history both short term and long term (3 months) to understand if you’re building a good endurance base.Similarly, I love what Garmin has done with the map overlays and split screen but I only occasionally have mini adventures and I know I have little use for them. However, if you are out every weekend somewhere near striving through the wilds then you could well use the features all the time. The Garmin Fenix 7 Pro and Epix Pro have very similar builds and come in three sizes, which is new for the Epix line. Having three different case sizes (42 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm) allows people to enjoy the best Garmin adventure watch experience regardless of their wrist sizes. You'll need to permit access to your heart rate data, the barometer, temperature and altitude information to make the most of this metric-rich option. The figure is determined by things Garmin is describing as 'Hill Endurance' and 'Hill Strength', as well as your VO2 Max. The main focus of "Glance Watch Face" is glanceability, so it's designed to show off simple information. Unlike others, the fonts made as large as possible, while still keeping a lot of information on the screen.

Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2) Review: Better Than Apple | WIRED

It can even be set to show a red light - something that can be paired with the all-new 'Red Shift Mode' that changes the display to shades of red to aid readability in darker conditions. These models are named Garmin Fenix 7 Pro Series and Epix Pro Gen2, respectively. Tech magazine, WinFuture has already unveiled visuals of these new models without revealing details about their technical specifications or prices. Most of my serious testing involved running, and just as expected, Garmin's metrics are best-in-class. Advanced running metrics include heart rate zones, running power (which used to require one of the best heart rate monitors to achieve), cadence in 'steps per minute', vertical oscillation, which tells you how much you bounce up and down while you run... I can't list them all here. But if you're a runner, this watch will tell you everything you could ever want to know. Also included in the leak was what's suspected to be the Garmin Approach S70 - something that another leak suggests could be joined by a couple more Garmin golf announcements for 2023.

Onto the features that will come to the first Epix Gen 2 and we’re now getting new mapping features like the ability to view weather overlaid on maps like temperature, rain, and wind. Next, there’s the AMOLED touchscreen on the Epix series. The touchscreen comes in three sizes, with the Epix Pro using the same display as the previous Epix: Again, our issue isn't as much with the score's accuracy as it is with how useful it can be when you don't clearly know how to improve it. Our score hasn't moved even with a lot more hills and mileage increases over the past six weeks, for example.

Currently, the Epix (Gen 2) is only available in the 47mm case size, so this would represent a first. It's also something we've already seen rumored in an earlier Epix Pro leak - one that also hinted the GPS watch would debut new Endurance Score and Activity Impact metrics, too. The clue is in the name of this one. If you want the time front and center, that's what this watch face will do. Design changes aren't usually a major factor in mid-cycle upgrades like the Epix Pro 2, but Garmin has actually added a couple of significant ones here. Both smartwatches come with new training metrics, including an Endurance Score, weather map overlays and a built-in LED flashlight, which Garmin says can light your way at night. The Epix Pro’s new pre-loaded activity modes include football, basketball, racquet sports and horse riding.

All in all, though, we can't fault what Garmin has done with the design and case changes. The big modifications to the design will naturally be saved for the Fenix 8/Epix 3, so this is about as substantial as things could really get from a mid-generation dip.
