Cardiac auscultation: Preliminary findings of a pilot study using continuous Wave Doppler and comparison with classic auscultation Int J Cardiol. 2013 Jul 31; 167(2):5 90–91 This curiosity could help children to learn more about the human body and how it works. It will encourage them to ask questions and seek answers. Matt McFarland, "Eko's stethoscope shows the potential of digital technology to reinvent health care", [1], Washington Post

The chest piece is typically made of a bell and a diaphragm. The bell is the open side, which often seems smaller because it’s deeper. It transmits lower sounds. Perfect Gift for kids: This kids doctor sets was recommended for kids age 3 years and up.They can dress like a Doctor with cap. Perfect for party, pretend play, role play, school classroom, holiday toy gifts, Christmas gifts and more In a study conducted by 3M, the maker of the Littman stethoscope, the company found that patient heart sounds were four times louder through the diaphragm of a Littmann stethoscope than that of the competitor. Which stethoscope is best for vets? Fontaine E, Coste S, Poyat C, Klein C, Lefort H, Leclerc T, et al. In-flight auscultation during medical air evacuation: comparison between traditional and amplified stethoscopes. Air Med J. 2014;33:283–5.

Acoustic stethoscopes operate on the transmission of sound from the chest piece, via air-filled hollow tubes, to the listener's ears. The chestpiece usually consists of two sides that can be placed against the patient for sensing sound: a diaphragm (plastic disc) or bell (hollow cup). If the diaphragm is placed on the patient, body sounds vibrate the diaphragm, creating acoustic pressure waves which travel up the tubing to the listener's ears. If the bell is placed on the patient, the vibrations of the skin directly produce acoustic pressure waves traveling up to the listener's ears. The bell transmits low frequency sounds, while the diaphragm transmits higher frequency sounds. To deliver the acoustic energy primarily to either the bell or diaphragm, the tube connecting into the chamber between bell and diaphragm is open on only one side and can rotate. The opening is visible when connected into the bell. Rotating the tube 180 degrees in the head connects it to the diaphragm. This two-sided stethoscope was invented by Rappaport and Sprague in the early part of the 20th century. [ citation needed] Electronic [ edit ] Electronic stethoscope The diaphragms, non-chill bell sleeve, and eartips may be removed, if necessary, for thorough cleaning. Ensure all parts and surfaces are dry before reassembly. To remove an eartip, grasp the eartip firmly using the thumb and forefinger of one hand and pull sharply away from the eartube while holding the eartube in the other hand. To attach the eartips, push the small side firmly onto the eartube until it snaps fully into place. To prevent ear canal injury, be sure eartips are firmly attached to the headset before inserting them into your ears. To prevent stethoscope damage, do not: immerse your stethoscope in any liquid, subject your stethoscope to any sterilization process (e.g., autoclaving, liquid chemical sterilization), or store in extreme heat. T. H.; Forbes, John, Sir, A Treatise on the Diseases of the Chest and on Mediate Auscultation (1835). New York: Samuel Wood & Sons; Philadelphia: Desilver, Thomas & Co. . Infant and pediatric stethoscopes have both a bell (open) side and a diaphragm (covered with a membrane) side. The smaller sizes allow the listener to hear only what they want, instead of heart and bowel sounds, which happens when an adult size is used on an infant. The tubing is latex-free and reportedly durable. Another advantage of this product is that the company offers a lifetime warranty and free replacement parts. This makes it a good investment for people who intend to use a stethoscope for a long period. Single head: These stethoscopes use just one side for listening, which may mean you miss a few of the highest or lowest tones. Despite improvements in technology, electronic stethoscopes have not been widely adopted in the daily practice of telemedicine. The reason for the low rate of usage is that there is no product that can transmit and store auscultation information over long distances in an accurate, reliable, and user-friendly manner. In addition, many cardiologists still believe that the quality of tele-auscultation is inferior to that of in-person auscultation. Mattioli L, Goertz K, Ardinger R, Belmont J, Cox R, Thomas C.
