About this deal

A charming town located in the Salento region, we love its beautiful baroque architecture, which is best seen by wandering through the town’s narrow streets and alleyways. Brindisi (BDS) is the nearest airport, just 30 minutes from Lecce. It has some international flights including from budget airlines like Ryanair. As with Brindisi, many visitors land at Bari airport and bypass the port city completely. But it’s worth stopping by this regional capital for a day or even a weekend break. Beach lovers are better served in other parts of Puglia, especially if you favour sand, but there are lido beaches just outside town. They are expensive and busy in the high season. Bari Vecchia, the historic old town, is an especially charming place. There you can visit the Basilica di San Nicola, a stunning church that houses the remains of Saint Nicholas – who, of course, was the inspiration for Santa Claus. Bari is also a good place to try street food, including panzerotti, a type of deep-fried dough filled with tomato and mozzarella, that is synonymous with the area. Space is limited in Bari Vecchia, so local women began making and selling fresh pasta on the street outside their homes. As always, the centro storico is where you want to head. The main square, Piazza Salandra, features an impressive column, the Fontana del Toro (Fountain of the Bull) and the Lecce-style baroque church, Chiesa di San Domenico. Corigliano d’Otranto The medieval Castello De Monti is a Salento highlight

The port of Taranto hosts numerous fishing boats. The fleet is mainly made up of about 80 fishing boats, which do not exceed 10 gross tonnage and which practice trawling, while the remaining small-scale fishing boats operate with gillnets. The sea, rich and generous, is populated by dentex and sea bream, grouper, mullet and anchovies, shrimp and squid. Other significant fishing ports are Manfredonia, Molfetta, Mola di Bari, Monopoli, Gallipoli and Castro Lidos (beach clubs with umbrella and sunbed rentals) dominate the Salento coast, but there’s always a free section. Expect extreme crowds in July and especially August. You can’t take the boat into the caves, but technically you could anchor and swim in. It was too wavy for us to do this, though. Massimo Monteduro, Pierangelo Buongiorno, Saverio Di Benedetto, Law and Agroecology: A Transdisciplinary Dialogue (2015), p. 176 We absolutely loved Hotel La Roccia right on the water in Castro. Rooms are simple but all have sea views and include a guaranteed spot at their lido. This was a major advantage in August.

The chapel features a disturbing sight—the skulls of 800 martyrs who resisted the Turkish invasion in 1480 that destroyed much of the city. Santa Maria di Leuca is one of the most popular Salento destinations to take a boat trip. Located at the tip of the peninsula, it’s where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet, so you can explore both coastlines. See our Lecce travel guide for lots more tips. Otranto Stunning views greet you wherever you wander around Otranto The top three towns or cities to visit in the Salento region are Lecce (inland near the top), Otranto (on the Adriatic Coast), and Gallipoli (on the Ionian Coast). The other Puglian airport Brindisi (BDS) is in the far south of the region, 300km away, and is a 3.5-hour drive from Vieste.
