I’m not so delighted with the finish though. The first coat went on OK but then it went all lumpy and bobbly: imagine dipping gloss paint into cotton wool, and dragging it around, and you’ll get an image of how bad the finish was. I fully accept that this may have been user error, but given how difficult I found this paint to work with, I can’t recommend it. Our uPVC door with one coat of Zinsser All Coat Exterior Satin paint looks fine. After two coats, it’s gone horribly lumpy. It looks a bit like wood grain. How I Solved the Door Paint Problem I did consider naming this blog post ‘How NOT To Paint a uPVC Front Door’ as my social media community will know how much of a nightmare it was. FrontDoorGate has been rumbling along for many months, and much blood, sweat and tears have been shed along the way. OK no blood, but tonnes of sweat and tears! But if you want to go for it, I have lots of tips to make painting uPVC easier. And I do think its worth all the trouble! If you’ve ever wondered how to makeover your uPVC front door using paint, read on for my guide on how to transform an old plastic front door. That said, it’s important to know how to paint a wooden front door before you get started. In this post, we’ll cover all bases with tips on what you’ll need, preparing your surface and painting the door for the best results. Choosing the right paint

Porous, or ‘thirsty’, surfaces like bare wood or MDF, tend to absorb paint meaning additional coats are likely to be required to achieve a durable finish. In this case, your 500ml tin will provide less than 3.5m 2 of full coverage. If you apply the paint too thinly, durability may be affected. If you’re not using a self-priming paint, you’ll need to prime the door. This can add extra time to the process. Apply primer across the whole door – and don’t forget the sides. If you’ve used our self-priming Al Fresco paint, there’s no need to worry about this stage.
