About this deal

After easily moving from The Ordinary Retinol 0.2% in Squalane to The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane, I didn’t think too much about how my skin would react to this 1% concentration. Therefore, using a moisturizer that contains squalane is an excellent solution to dry skin. One of the biggest advantages of doing this is that squalane doesn’t have an oily feel. It is an elegant moisturizer that doesn’t clog the pores and is suitable for sensitive skin. Squalane oil mimicsour natural skin oil, which means when it’s applied on the skin, the skin recognizes it and takes it as its own, our skin understands and compliments it. So, if you’re scared or worried that squalane is going to break you out, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about, because that is never going to happen. Squalane oil is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and is suitable for use on all skin types. It has excellent emollient properties, meaning it cankeep your skin hydrated and moisturized.

Adapalene, a third-generation retinoid and approved to sell over the counter as Differin to treat acne, has also been shown to improve the signs of aging. This study demonstrated that adapalene 0.1% gel is as effective as tretinoin 0.025% gel with less irritation. Granactive Retinoid is also known as Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR) and is a newer type of retinoid that is less irritating than traditional retinol and other retinoids but provides similar effectiveness. Don’t mix retinol with AHAs or BHAs because using too many active ingredients, too frequently, can spark sensitivity. For this reason, also be careful if using a cleanser with actives. NOTE: The Ordinary instructs that all 6 of the following retinoids should be refrigerated after opening. Moisturising hyaluronic acid and ceramides can help to lessen the severity of retinol side effects. However, Dr Mahto recommends waiting 15 to 20 minutes after applying your retinol serum before applying your chosen moisturiser, so as not to minimise the retinoid's efficacy. What can you not mix with retinol?

Retinaldehyde must be converted to retinoic acid before our skin can use it. This conversion dilutes the strength of the retinoid active. Because it’s similar to the squalene found in human skin, it’s readily absorbed by the skin. What’s more, it’s not only more stable, but it’s also one of the safest additions to your skincare routine. The EPA has marked it with a green circle to show that it’s verified to be of low concern. Squalane benefits Squalane is a plant derived or hydrogenated oil which is used in its pure form or in cosmetic formulations for moisturizing, hydrating and soothing the skin. if you’re new to retinoids, it’s best to start with a lower concentration of Granactive Retinoids, so see how your skin responds, and increase usage until your skin can tolerate the stronger 5% concentration. The Ordinary Retinol/Retinoid Evening Skincare Routine Examples Granactive retinoid and retinol are both great choices for sensitive skin. However, since Granactive Retinoid is more powerful than retinol, it might be best to start out with Retinol, especially if you’re new to using retinoids. Granactive Retinoid Vs. Retinol For Aging SkinTIP: If you really want to use retinol and vitamin C together, consider using The Ordinary retinol or retinoid serums with a vitamin C derivative like The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%. Apply Ascorbyl Glucoside first and then follow with retinol or a retinoid. If your skin is adjusted to higher strengths of retinol, this may be a good option for you. The squalane base is lightweight and comfortable to wear. Retinol also should not be used with other potent actives. Any other products that contain potent or acidic ingredients should not be used along with retinol as they can degrade each other or cause an adverse reaction. What Is Granactive Retinoid? If you choose to use one of The Ordinary’s retinol over their Granactive Retinoids, they recommend that you start with this 0.2% retinol formula. It will help combat the dryness caused by retinol while allowing the retinol to work its magic. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effects of squalane can help treat any redness or irritation that results from using retinol.

Bottom line: HPR, or granactive retinoid is stronger and more effective than retinol. As far as ranking goes: retinol > granactive retinoid > all trans retinoic acid What’s The Difference Between Granactive Retinoid And Retinol? The Ordinary suggests patch testing prior to use for the first time to avoid an adverse initial reaction. The Ordinary offers a variety of retinoid and retinol concentrations at ridiculously low prices to target the signs of aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, dullness, and more. The Ordinary Tip: Start with Retinol 0.2% in Squalane and slowly work your way up to Retinol 0.5% in Squalane and Retinol 1% in Squalane. That said, if you are prone to sensitivity, you may prefer to use newer retinoid technologies, such as those found in our Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion. Without getting heavy on the chemistry, hydrogenation modifies squalene so that it’s more stable and has a longer shelf life. This modified version is called squalane. The squalane used in skincare products comes from shark liver oil or vegetable oils, though it’s mostly plant-derived due to ethical reasons.
