But what do chorus pedals sound like? Chorus is a lush modulation effect that, when applied to a guitar, creates a “doubled” sound that’s akin to a 12-string guitar. This is because a chorus pedal works by splitting an instrument’s signal into two — leaving one unaffected, while slightly delaying the second signal and modulating/detuning its pitch. That’s how the rich doubled effect is achieved! The Boss MT-2 Metal Zone is one of the most famous guitar pedals ever to be released. Since its original release in 1991, Boss has sold over a million units - and counting. For over 30 years, the MT-2 is the undisputed king of high gain distortion. But perhaps the Metal Zone’s greatest cultural impact can be observed in the generations of guitar players it has weaned on high-gain. The Metal Zone has an extremelyflexible EQ. Its Waza counterpartcarries over the same controls, but thanks to the redesign, is even more sensitive than before. So, how does a guitar noise gate pedal work? It’s actually a lot simpler than you might think. A noise gate works by “opening” and letting sound through when your guitar/amp signal goes above a certain threshold (which you can manually set on most noise gate pedals). Under appreciated, misunderstood, whatever; 30 years on, the MT-2 Metal Zone remains in production and is an evergreen pedalboard choice. In 2018, Boss released a Waza Craft version of the Metal Zone, with an enhanced Standard mode joined by a Custom mode voiced for contemporary metal styles. The key magic was focusing and boosting midrange in the first gain stage to enhance the sweet spot for guitar sound. Then the MT-2 can provide singing sustain with any amp and [at any] volume. I tried every distortion pedal on the market and every time I heard the sound that excited me, it was the Metal Zone! Simon Neil, Biffy ClyroMore recently, tech metal bands have leaned on modelling units like the Axe-FX series. Even so, many of the models used, like the FAS Modern, are simply hot-rodded emulations of classic metal amps, often with a boost in front. If you had a big enough amp, it’d put some muscle on those riffs; if going through an eight-inch practice amp speaker it’d at least make those harmonics bounce off the fingerboard and give you something searing to work with. For many players, certainly in the early '90s, the preference was to cut. Today’s Metal Zone users, particularly its professional fraternity, use it quite differently.
