Consists of a central heating boiler and a separate, pressurised hot water tank fed directly by the cold water mains feed, so the tank heats and stores hot water at mains pressure. Timer and thermostat control of the central heating is available independently of the hot water, due to a cylinder thermostat fitted to the hot water cylinder. A combi boiler requires good water pressure, so may not be suitable in some residential areas where pressure is low. That’s neat, as you can start with the cheap kit and then upgrade as you see fit to add TRVs to every radiator in the house. Once you’ve done that, the room thermostat can be used to control a room and all TRVs in it, as Wiser supports rooms with multiple radiators.Gravity-fed systems are no longer fitted new and do not comply to current building regulations, therefore homeowners are increasingly opting to replace older gravity-fed systems to either combi or fully-pumped conventional boiler systems. CHARACTERISTICS OF GRAVITY-FED SYSTEMS (non-pumped) Central heating is not available independently of the hot water – water will always be heated when the heating is on whether it’s used or not. These smart radiator thermostats replace the TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves) on your radiator, the type that let you adjust the temperature of the radiator manually. If you don’t have TRVs then you’ll need to bear the cost of changing your current valves to TRVs on top of the cost of the smart heating system. There’s no denying the radiator thermostats are bulkier than TRVs, but we found we didn’t notice them as much as we expected to.

In addition, each room can have Open Window Detection turned on. This uses an algorithm to detect when a draft is detected, suggesting an open window or door. The heating is then turned off to conserve energy. Drayton Wiser may be functional, but its plain all-white plastic design certainly isn’t stylish. If you prefer gadgets that make a design statement, this isn’t the smart thermostat for you.

This is set up in the same way as regular conventional systems, but in this case the system has two heating zones being controlled by the boiler, with separate programming for each usually with two thermostats. This may be the case in larger or extended homes. Hot water can be stored within the cylinder, beneficial for larger households where a lot of hot water is used. Away Mode overrides your existing schedules with a lower set temperature of your choosing, ensuring your home doesn’t get too cold while you’re away. You can turn off appliances in Away Mode, too. You can also set up geofencing using IFTTT so your system will automatically switch to Away Mode when you’re out of the house.The final component, the smart radiator thermostat, is a white plastic cylinder, which fit to the radiator once the existing valve has been unscrewed. To manually override any schedules you may have set, simply swivel the top of the radiator thermostat right to start the radiator heating, or left to stop heating. An LED on the radiator thermostat glows red temporarily when the radiator is heating, and blue if it's been turned off. Turning and holding the radiator thermostat will also reset or put it into set-up mode, depending upon how long you hold it in that position. With the standard kit, you get two TRVs and one room thermostat. If you start with this, you can put the TRVs into your most heavily used rooms for individual control, and the room thermostat elsewhere in the house to control everything else. Custom Moments can be created, where you set the target temperature that you want. For example, you could set a holiday mode where the heating’s mostly off but give a boost at set times to warm it through. Heat Pumps are also supported and selectable in the app as the available heat source. Underfloor heating is also supported: wet systems need the Underfloor Heating Controller; electric systems can use the Drayton Wiser Eletrical Heat Switch.
