About this deal

Noel now has plans to study the tongues of larger cats including tigers and lions to understand how tongue spines scale across the rest of the cat family. “The flexibility of cats' tongue spines may have broad-reaching applications from an easy-to-clean hairbrush to wound cleaning within the medical field,” said Noel. Despite this, their products are well-liked and their customers are pleased with them. Tara and Jason are dedicated to their work and their company, and they have made significant progress since they started their company. Watercolor Brushes A recent study by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, shed new light on how cats’ scratchy tongues enable them to keep themselves so clean: they’re covered with hundreds of sharp, tiny hooks called filiform papillae. The hooks, which are composed of keratin and give cats’ tongues that scratchy sandpaper feel, have built-in scoops that carry saliva deep into felines’ fur when they groom. Manufacturers may also make up new, modern descriptions for brush shapes: for instance traditional ‘Bright’ brushes are now sometimes rechristened more descriptively as ‘Short Flats’ by the companies that produce them. Sometimes a brush shape may also be named differently depending on what sort of bristles or hairs it contains. For example the ‘Flat’ brush and ‘Wash’ brush are identical in shape, but a brush is only called a ‘Wash’ if it is designed for watercolour painting and is made from very soft hairs. Many (not all) cats live in hot climates, so this would be really important for their survival. The researchers looked at the tongues of several species of cat, including domestic cat, bobcat, cougar, snow leopard, tiger and lion.

The sharp spines enable the distribution of saliva through the entire hair coat down to the cat’s skin, cleansing the coat and helping bring down the cat’s body temperature on warm days.If you don’t spend the full value of the gift card, the remainder stays as a balance on the gift card for you to use another time. This means cats can lose around a quarter of the total heat they need to lose per day through the tiny bit of saliva in their tongue spines. (We lose heat through liquid by sweating when we’re hot.) Cool for cats

We found that for all of these different animals, from tiger to bobcat to snow leopard, the minimum fur height that you can compress to is always going to be less than the height of the papillae,” said lead researcher Alexis Noel, PhD. “Which makes us think that the papillae height and the papillae shape is actually optimal for a whole bunch of different types of fur.” Characterful names for brush shapes have emerged over time from various different painting traditions (the ‘Rigger’ brush shape, for example, derives from the type of brush traditionally used for painting the rigging of ships). This has resulted in the fact that there isn’t any industry standard for describing different brush types, and whilst the names are applied by manufacturers reasonably consistently, there are sometimes confusing overlaps. For example although the terms ‘Rigger’ ‘Liner’ and ‘Script’ technically describe slightly different shapes of brush head, they are often applied interchangeably. The Bichon Frise is, predictably, a French breed. As you can glean from the root word “Bich,” the name of the dog has its root in quite literal and old French translations. Like the Maltese, the different Bich breeds came from the Mediterranean area and have a long history throughout the Europe and European trade. Sailors would bring similar breeds around with them and, thanks to its cheerful personality, these dogs would be a hit, especially in locations like Spain. Later on, Italian nobility found these breed types to be very enjoyable and no doubt gave them plenty of lap time. The researchers found that these scoop-shaped papillae are what allow cats to get saliva right down to their skin, which could inspire new approaches to cleaning and depositing fluids on all kinds of hairy, furry, and fuzzy surfaces. “Transporting liquids is a problem for animals and engineers,” says Sunghwan “Sunny” Jung, a bioengineer at Cornell University who was not involved in the research. “This paper shows that scientists can use the physics of basic animal behavior to answer fundamental questions.” Cat scanThe class is “very integrative and interdisciplinary,” Mountcastle said. “The students are learning a little bit about 3D design, they’re learning about 3D printing, they’re learning about designing experiments to test the hypothesis, and they get to look at a lot of cool biological adaptations.” The family Felidae roamed the Earth for 11 million y before being domesticated 10,000 y ago in Southwest Asia ( 1). Today, house cats can spend up to 24% of their waking time grooming their fur coat ( 2). Grooming helps the cat to remove pesky fleas, loose hairs, and excess heat ( 3 – 5). In the absence of grooming, excess debris can tangle fur, causing painful tugging of the skin and even infection. Grooming a cat’s fur is challenging due to its two layers: an exposed topcoat for protection and a hidden undercoat of down hairs for warmth ( 6). The TIGR is the perfect example of bio-inspired design, says Megan Schuknecht, Director of Design Challenges at the Biomimicry Institute in Missoula, Montana. “Cats have been around us for centuries, but nobody’s ever thought to look that closely before,” she says. There are few dogs out there who more iconic than the Chihuahua. The ultimate purse dog. Pups so small and adorable that many owners sadly treat them more like accessories than pets. You may have recognized this breed from its presence on the big and small screen – Bruiser from the movie “Legally Blonde” and the Taco Bell dog are two of the most famous examples (not to mention Paris Hilton regularly posing with one and claiming it was her pet). Perhaps you fell in love with the breed after watching the movie “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” (it happens, we won’t judge!). No matter how you became a fan of the tiny Chihuahua dog, once you’ve owned one, you’ll be hooked on the breed for life. These little pups are just that lovable.

Synthetic brushes and natural brushes can be used for painting watercolors. Synthetic Taklon brushes are an alternative to sable hair and boar bristles because they are synthetic. Because acrylic paints contain chemicals that can cause damage or break down natural brushes, you should never use acrylic paints with your brushes. With six handles, you can easily control the brush and it does not shed. Spectrum synthetic brushes are an excellent choice for beginners who want to learn about the art of watercolor painting. A Protege Synthetic Kolinsky Sable Hair brush provides a thirsty belly and a sharp point. The brushes are ideal for painting because they are very flexible, have a high consistency, and can be used for a long time.Assistant Professor of Biology Andrew Mountcastle observes as (from left) Thad Gunther ’21, Jeremy Bennett ’21, Ruth van Kampen ’19, and Josh Turner ’20 test the performance of their 3D-printed models of grooming brushes that are inspired by cat tongues. National Geographic is working to avert the extinction of lions, cheetahs, and other big cats with the Big Cats Initiative, a comprehensive program that supports innovative projects. Learn how you can help save these animals. Photograph by John Eastcott and Yva Momatiuk The Puggle’s low maintenance coat and his ability to get much of his exercise indoors make him the perfect pet for those living in the city or an apartment building. Your Puggle will have no problem fitting into a city or couch potato lifestyle. However, he still enjoys running around outside, so the occasional trip to a dog park is an excellent idea as well. Owing to his hound genes, this cute designer dog can have a penchant for sniffing his way straight to trouble. So make sure to always keep your Puggle on a leash in unsecured areas.Puggle breeders have been working diligently to create a more standard look and temperament for the hybrid. This crossbreed is accepted by several registries. Breeders even have high hopes that the Puggle will eventually be recognized by the American Kennel Club, an organization that holds an infamous bias against designer dogs.. For now, this Pug/Beagle mix shares the fate of his other crossbreed fellows and gets no recognition from this prestigious organization. One day the AKC will finally learn to love designer pups along with everyone else, but it is not this day. This 4μl is only around 5% of the total saliva on the surface of the cat’s tongue. Not much, but it has a really important function as it can deposit saliva right down to a cat’s skin.
