About this deal

The application of eggshell paint will vary depending on the surface you are painting and the type of eggshell paint you are using. While the application of eggshell will differ, there are a number of things that are consistent.

Once again it can be mixed in any colour, including Dulux, RAL & British Standard colours. While white is by far the most popular shade for woodwork such as doors and skirting boards, the use of colour has become increasingly popular. It is also ideal for painting furniture, where its ability to be mixed in any colour can allow you to let your imagine go wild. Oil-based gloss paints more often then not are two-coat systems. This comprises of an undercoat, which is usually a separate product and a topcoat of the gloss emulsion. Some products such as Dulux Once Gloss are one-coat oil-based gloss paints, although this is a specially designed formulation due to the long recoat time of oil-based paints. Q. Is oil based gloss waterproof? This gloss still looks brand new years after it has been applied. You may find it easier to apply the paint using a foam roller, then laying off with a brush. Keeping your brush wet, or even wiping your surfaces with a damp cloth before painting will help you avoid brush marks. However, water-based paints tend to yellow less than oil-based paint. That’s because water-based paint doesn’t have oily deposits and uses water as its solvent. On the other hand, oil-based paint has lots of oily deposits and uses oil as its solvent. Oil-based paints are high in VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) that are harmful to the environment, meaning that in 2010 new EU regulations came into effect that meant VOC's had to be reduced in oil-based paints. Due to the changes, oil-based paint formulations had to change, which is why the are susceptible to yellowing. This is even stated by many manufacturers themselves, with water-based formulations becoming the new norm. Q. Can you still buy oil based gloss paint?

It is used in a variety of ways, which is why eggshell comes in oil-based and water-based formulations. It can be used on woodwork such as bedroom furniture, kitchen cabinets, skirting-boards or doors or with acrylic eggshells in higher-traffic rooms such as children's bedrooms. The reason it is more suitable for these higher-traffic rooms is that it has added durability compared to a matt emulsion, allowing it to be easily wiped and cleaned without marking the paint. It is also suitable for high condensation rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens as they have moisture resistant properties. Interior walls that are powdery, are stained or are suffering from salt migration must also be primed as this will affect the paints ability to perform. A primer such a Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 is perfect for priming these bare plastered walls ready to paint. Paint Modern synthetic paintbrushes are of little use to apply oil-based gloss. You also need a certain type of roller. So, I thought I’d include a little section on the best brush and roller to go for. Water-based gloss is harder to use (not levelling like oil-based gloss) but it won’t yellow with time, which is important for the client. One thing that is important for any decorator is drying time, and water-based gloss has a drying time of around 6 hours. This means you can put second coat on same day. It also doesn’t smell like solvent and finally, your brushes are easier to clean. Our last section is some rapid-fire white spirit FAQs to help you with all of your decorating tasks. How to get rid of white spirit smell?UV Exposure– The paint will turn yellow if the paint is exposed to UV rays (sun). This happens if the paint is sealed with a clear coat that doesn’t have UV-resistant additives. The UV rays will make the clear coat appear yellow but don’t affect the paint underneath. To fix it, remove the clear coat and apply a UV-resistant sealer (such as exterior polyurethane) over the paint. Dulux Trade Eggshell is touch dry in 4-6 hours, has an excellent coverage of up to 17m2 per litre and leaves a professional finish that lasts much longer than others on the market without yellowing. This is crucial if you are using a white eggshell, which is particularly prone to this over time. Another huge plus is that it is self-undercoating which can be a real help, especially for the average DIY'er. Pet Urine– The high amount of ammonia in the pet’s urine can stain white paint and give it a yellowish tint.

It can be applied with either a paint brush or a foam roller, and getting a smooth surface with no streaks or drips is easy, even for beginners. Although it should always be applied in a well-ventilated area, it has a much weaker odour than other oil-based satinwood paints.

Moisture– Moisture (water) can cause white paint to turn yellow. If the paint is exposed to constant water (such as a water leak), the particles and minerals in the water will stain the white paint and cause it to turn yellow. Sometimes, the paint can turn brown too. Water vapor and steam can also cause a yellow tint on the paint. This is common with oil-based paints applied in the kitchen. It takes significantly longer than water-based paints to dry. The label on the can will tell you exactly how long you should wait between coats, but expect it to take between eight to 16 hours. Lisa adds, “This also means that the space has to be kept dust-free overnight (versus an hour or two) until the paint has fully dried so particles aren’t settling on the wet surfaces.”

Eggshell paints are closer in sheen to satinwood, but are a little more matte. Again, these are better suited to walls and ceilings as they aren’t as durable as satinwood. What do I need to consider when choosing a satinwood paint? Through advances in technology following the investment of paint manufacturers to find better water-based solutions to gloss paints, water-based gloss can now match the quality of oil-based paint. Q. How long for oil-based gloss paint to dry? As they dry slower, they can achieve less brush strokes and can be easier to work around on the surface Now we have covered the types of paints that are available, we are now able to discuss eggshell paint. Eggshell paint has the same amount of sheen as an egg, which is where it gets its name. It is a low-sheen finish that has more sheen than matt, but less than the mid-sheen finishes of silk, satin or soft-sheen. Opacity of the gloss is poor. However, opacity of the primer makes up for it! You can apply multiple coats of either product in a day and the ease of use is brilliant. The best thing about Teknos Futura 90 is, unlike most other hybrid or water-based gloss paints, it has an incredibly high sheen level. It’s very durable too!!White paint can turn yellow if exposed to water, moisture, UV, or grease. To fix yellowish-white paint, use baking soda, sand it, or remove and re-apply it. As a decorator, the question “which is the best white gloss” comes up regularly. It used to be a simple choice, but now the range of gloss paint products are exponential. We’re not just talking about more brands (of which there are many), but there are also different types of gloss paint. You have the traditional oil-based gloss, which turns yellow over time. Water-based gloss, which stays white forever, but generally leaves a substandard finish. Then hybrid gloss, which is a compromise between oil and water. It is crucial when explaining what eggshell paint is to put it into context. Paint comes in a range of finishes that vary in terms of their 'sheen', otherwise known as the amount of light they reflect. The more sheen a paint has, the more durable it is. This is why gloss and satin is often used on woodwork and metal as these areas are prone to scuffs, while lower sheen paints are used on interior walls & ceilings. These finishes include matt, eggshell, silk, soft sheen, satin & gloss.
