Description

These quatrains reflect the sceptic side of Iranian identity, which unbeknownst to many has been as active and profound as the spiritual one," explains Saeed Talajooy, an expert in Persian literature at the University of St Andrews The first three days of the voyage from Queenstown had passed without apparent incident. A fire had begun in one of Titanic 's coal bunkers approximately 10 days prior to the ship's departure, and continued to burn for several days into its voyage, [142] but passengers were unaware of this situation. Fires occurred frequently on board steamships at the time, due to spontaneous combustion of the coal. [143] The fires had to be extinguished with fire hoses by moving the coal on top to another bunker and by removing the burning coal and feeding it into the furnace. [144] The fire was finally extinguished on 14 April. [145] [146] There has been some speculation and discussion as to whether this fire and attempts to extinguish it may have made the ship more vulnerable to sinking. [147] [148] But lately I’ve been getting into the Titanic again. Over the last month, I’ve watched two documentaries and started reading Ghosts of Titanic, which is the second of Charles Pellegrino’s trilogy about the ship. This was one of my favorite books growing up. I read it repeatedly throughout middle school and fancied myself a Titanic buff, watching National Geographic documentaries and idolizing Robert Ballard and failing to assemble thousand-piece 3-foot Titanic models, and playing the CD-ROM game Titanic: Adventure Out Of Time, which was kind of like MYST on a ship. I even spent time at my local library in Merrill, WI, researching the life of Daniel Coxon (known as Popcorn Dan due to his employment as a popcorn vendor), a Merrill resident, who died on the Titanic. He only had one arm. Makes it difficult to swim.

Captain Edward Smith had been in command of Titanic 's sister Olympic when she in 1911 collided with a warship. Even though that ship was designed to sink others by ramming them, it suffered greater damage than Olympic, thereby strengthening the image of the class being unsinkable. The White Star Line faced an increasing challenge from its main rivals, Cunard—which had recently launched Lusitania and Mauretania, the fastest passenger ships then in service—and the German lines Hamburg America and Norddeutscher Lloyd. Ismay preferred to compete on size rather than speed and proposed to commission a new class of liners that would be larger than anything that had gone before, as well as being the last word in comfort and luxury. [7] The White Star Line sought an upgrade of its fleet primarily to respond to the introduction of the Cunard giants but also to considerably strengthen its position on the Southampton–Cherbourg–New York service that had been inaugurated in 1907. The new ships would have sufficient speed to maintain a weekly service with only three ships instead of the original four. Thus, the Olympic and Titanic would replace RMS Teutonic of 1889, RMS Majestic of 1890 as well as RMS Adriatic of 1907. RMS Oceanic would remain on the route until the third new ship could be delivered. [ citation needed] Majestic resumed her old position on the White Star Line's New York service post the loss of Titanic '. On May 31, 1911, Titanic’s immense hull–the largest movable manmade object in the world at the time–made its way down the slipways and into the River Lagan in Belfast. More than 100,000 people attended the launching, which took just over a minute and went off without a hitch. The tragic sinking of the luxury liner spawned many movies and books retelling the incidents that led to the fateful disaster. In this article, we look at the top 10 must-read books on the Titanic. Then James Cameron’s Titanic hit theaters, at which point my enthusiasm for the doomed ship cooled. I suppose the movie Titanic was the iceberg that sank the Titanic of my Titanic interest. One night, while sailing between America and Ireland, the Titan crashes into a smaller ship at full speed in fog, splitting it in half. Rowland, who witnessed the collision while on lookout, is offered a bribe by the captain for his silence, but refuses and vows to expose the deed once in port. The captain and the officers attempt to discredit Rowland's testimony by drugging him. The Salvation Army newspaper, The War Cry, reported that "none but a heart of stone would be unmoved in the presence of such anguish. Night and day that crowd of pale, anxious faces had been waiting patiently for the news that did not come. Nearly every one in the crowd had lost a relative." [188] It was not until 17 April that the first incomplete lists of survivors came through, delayed by poor communications. [189]
