The DS hasn’t had the best of times with 3D visuals, particularly from developers outside of Nintendo, but Square Enix has done an admirable job here. Characters are big and nicely modelled, and the courts are themed around the various locations you’d expect to see in a Mario game – with some even sporting various hazards. For a DS title it’s not shabby at all. Audio is typically Nintendo, although the main theme music feels a little out of place. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games sees both characters and a host of their friends compete in numerous Olympic challenges. There’s sprinting, swimming, gymnastics, karate, skateboarding and more. And Mario’s down to try his hand at them all. Even better, you can play in local multiplayer, competing against your friends directly. There’s a lot to love here, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best Mario sports games of all time. Let’s just see what Paris 2024 has in store…

Something just doesn’t fit with Mario Slam Basketball on the Nintendo DS. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s a sports game produced by Square Enix and published by Nintendo or maybe it’s the fact that you’re playing a 3 on 3 basketball game in which the predominant control scheme is the stylus. Once you’ve got past the initial awkwardness you’ll find a game that is remarkably simple and fun for a short period, but it’s far from the classic handheld game you might be expecting from such a heavy hitting duo. A fun feature to Mario Superstar Baseball is the ability to recruit a player from the team just defeated, meaning that a true superstar team can be created in preparation for the final in Bowser’s Castle. The Spiny Shell in this game does not possess wings. It acts as a more powerful item than the Red Shell, as it follows the ball regardless of where it is, creating a blue explosion. Once thrown, it does not miss its target. The gameplay is based around the real-world sport of basketball, with a few twists. Regular shots are worth 20 points, long shots are worth 30 points and each character has their own special shot worth 40 points. While on offense, players can also collect coins by dribbling the ball on floor panels, which will increase how many points each shot is worth. While on defense, touching floor panels will instead produce an item that can be used to help gain possession of the ball. Special shots can be performed by drawing character-specific symbols on the touch screen. The single mode that is limited to multi-card play, Exhibition mode has up to two players to choose their team of 3 players and face off against each other, subject to the default basketball rules and settings as normal Exhibition Mode. Players can choose a team of three characters from a pool of available characters, even the opponent's players if desired (each spot left blank is chosen randomly), and jump into any course played and won in Tourney Mode.
