Baker, L. B. et al. Skin-interfaced microfluidic system with machine learning-enabled image processing of sweat biomarkers in remote settings. Adv. Mat. Tech. https://doi.org/10.1002/admt.202200249 (2022). Developing a complex new ecosystem requires patience, slicing tasks into bite size chunks, and designing focused pilots to understand concept pinch points. Early on, it’s important to identify constraints that can affect consumer usage.

Given that measuring your sweat rate by weighing yourself before and after exercise is neither difficult nor expensive and is likely more reliable (often still considered the 'gold standard' for fluid loss measurement in lab based testing), perhaps it should remain the serious athletes' go-to method for collecting sweat rate data anyway? Something to consider if understanding your sweat rate is the primary reason you're considering buying some Gx Sweat Patches. The hydration recommendations in the app Not exactly groundbreaking. Drink fluids before, during, and after my workout. For every 30 minutes, add a cup or so. While the information is pretty basic, in the past few weeks since testing it has prompted me to be more intentional about my hydration. When you are sure that the leak is completely sealed, allow the sealant to dry properly. Test The Bottle Debris and dirt might cause leaks. Ensure you thoroughly clean it and take out dirt and debris that can cause leaks.

I don't know if you live in the USA or not, but a good 60% of its citizens are generally in poor health, have poor eating habits, have poor drinking habits, poor fitness habits, poor financial habits, and are in a continuous state of mental and physical stress. And they know it. So, there are a gazillion "improve your life" type products, with 99.9% of them being scams.

So far, the Gx Sweat Patch appears effective at providing 'ballpark' estimates of your sweat sodium concentration (i.e. how salty your sweat is) when compared with our Sweat Test. If this trend continues, the Gx Sweat Patch may prove to be a viable alternative option if you want to get the Sweat Test with us done, but are not in a position to visit a Sweat Test Center. NB: The Gx patches are only available to US-based athletes at present, with the app only available on iOS devicesThe final design works because, despite doing something extremely innovative, the Gx patch itself is fairly low-tech. But you can think of it as the tip of a tech iceberg: a simple, highly visible element that leverages a vast ecosystem of servers, algorithms, connectivity and careful design to do something extraordinary. So the pilot was designed to take as many readings as possible, and photograph each patch not once, but twice: first with an iOS application that had the sole purpose of image capture and data collection, then again using a DSLR camera. The resulting database of hi-res photos, smartphone photos, algorithm outputs, and direct sweat testing created the foundation that the rest of the project would stand on.

The Gx Sweat Patch is useless for real-time sweat data. This makes it largely unhelpful for uncertain conditions—like summiting a mountain or running a marathon—when you might want to know how you’ll need to fuel and hydrate in advance. Unless you want to buy a few patches to nerd out on the data from extreme and rare circumstances after the fact, I’d save it for the workouts you do consistently. That way the data actually goes to use. Good for specific conditions only Typically, serious athletes and people involved in long, strenuous activities can handle the added sugar, as they will burn it off, during their normal routines. Extra sugar is more likely to cause health complications in people who exercise less often or only for an hour or less. We started with a simple hypothesis: that every athlete is unique, and therefore has unique hydration needs. The perfect scenario to test this hypothesis came when the Brazilian national soccer team asked Gatorade for help in preparing for the 2014 World Cup. Brazil’s coaches were looking to improve the team’s hydration and recovery during the two-week competition on their home turf. Each sweat profile is designed to give you insight into how your body works in a specific environment and intensity. In other words, if I do the same 30-minute incline walk on my treadmill, with my thermostat set to 70 degrees, five days a week, I can use just one sweat profile to inform all of my future 30-minute incline walks. http://healthyeatingresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/HER-Sports-Drinks-Research-Review-6-2012.pdf

Now, with the introduction of the Smart Gx Bottle and Gummies, Gatorade has expanded its ecosystem greatly. Pairing with the Gatorade Gx App, personalized fuel plans are available based on elements such as activity, goals, duration and more, guiding users to appropriately utilize the brand’s various products. Whilst there's a heated debate in the sports science world about the finer points of hydration and electrolyte replacement guidelines, it's clear that there's no 'one-size-fits-all' advice.

It's rated to work in a temperature range of between 47F and 95F (~8C and 35C) and can be used either indoors or outdoors and across a variety of land based sports, but does not work in the water. Both Gatorade and water will help the body regain fluid lost through exercise and other physical activity. The difference is that manufacturers add additional elements, such as sugar and electrolytes, to Gatorade and other sports drinks. You may experience leaks when using these bottles due to several factors. It could be leaking if the lid is not properly closed. Finally, the hydration guidance in the Gx app feels like it's weakest link so far. Collecting data on your sweat rate and sweat sodium losses is useful if it can easily be used to inform your hydration strategy. However, the in-app recommendations we've seen to this point are quite vague and cover other aspects of performance such as sleep and protein consumption alongside basic info on post-workout fluid intake. The app wraps many of these parameters (along with training data) into a single target number but, so far, it's not entirely clear what this all means, nor how it relates specifically to planning your fluid and electrolyte intake. The app is also not particularly intuitive to use so it can take a lot of time to find information you're looking for The Gx Platform was developed for pro athletes, but we discovered there was an opportunity in the consumer ecosystem to bring personalized sports nutrition to anyone interested in maximizing their athletic performance. We needed to find a solution that would allow us to democratize lab-based sweat testing, so Smart and Gatorade collaborated with Epicore Biosystems, a company that has developed a proprietary sweat microfluidic sensing platform, to create a single-use wearable patch that analyzes the body’s sweat.
