About this deal

The pre-release effects buzz was that the little group of stop-motion animators that created the Hologram chess board in Star Wars would help bring Dragonslayer’s title monster to life. As Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett and Peter Kuran were already ‘names’ we anticipated a dragon like none before. At the conclusion, early Christian peasants led by an oddly-cast Albert Salmi ( Wild River) claim the dragon’s death as a victory for their Lord. Then the scurvy King Casiodorus officially dubs himself the Dragon Slayer of record. With his amulet lost forever, Valerian and Galen exit to new adventures. But not all the magic seems to have departed ..

Highfalutin descriptions of artistic intent aside, Dragonslayer is cited as one of Guillermo Del Toro’s favorite fantasy films, and rightfully so. It’s exactly the fantasy epic that studios wanted to produce in mass quantities, but this effort actually has the fictional world colored in well enough to stand above the rest. Plus, as you may know, the dragon that needs slaying is a practical effects marvel that came from the innovative minds at Industrial Light and Magic. Yes, that’s right, Phil Tippett of Star Wars fame took the original concepts for the dragon and developed a reference model for Danny Lee of Disney. This model was then used to create the final creature, which consisted of several different effects and animation models. Every penny spent on the result is right up there on the screen, as the Dragon’s Lair sequence during the climax still astounds. Oh, and this film inspired the development of Go-Motion, ILM’s mostion-control technology being adapted to stop-motion animation. Some films that initially “flop” at release take the long road, eventually finding their audience and creators of note who champion a title as a hidden gem. But Matthew Robbins says Dragonslayer never really got there in his eyes. Dragonslayer (1981), starring Peter MacNicol, Ralph Richardson, John Hallam, Peter Eyre, and Albert Salmi. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on February 21. I never saw this in theaters so this is the first time I’ve gotten to watch it the way it’s supposed to look, and it is just a gorgeous thing. healthier skin tones, deeper and more lifelike grays, and more satisfying earthen colors, all of which are the primary shades seen throughout the film.

First things first: Our sources continue to report that Disney is likely to release both James Cameron’s original Avatar (2009) and his long-awaited remaster of The Abyss (1989) on physical 4K Ultra HD early next year. Both titles are expected to arrive on disc at the same time as the home video release of the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, which debuts in theaters in just 9 days. We don’t have any details as to which version(s) of The Abyss this release may include, but when we’re able to confirm we’ll certainly post an update here. enough to pay the premium. The image clarity and textural elegance are first-class. It's incredible how filmic and sharp it looks, with every worn bit of

Unearthed Films is expected to release filmmaker David Twohy’s directorial debut, The Grand Tour: Disaster in Time (1992, aka Timescape), on Blu-ray on 2/7/23. You can see the cover artwork below. With fresh eyes and ears, Robbin says, “I was proud of it because I had been out of touch with it for so long. It reminded me that whenever it was operating at its best, it was a very classy, very accomplished film. And I thought some of the work with the actors was good. It was an interesting story. It had a lot of odd [things] like this whole gender thing that [Caitlin Clarke’s character Valerian] goes through; I was very proud of that. It's a very odd experience, because it's been over 40 years. [At the time], Sir Ralph was this doddering senior. Well, I'm 79… the exact age he was! There's a lot of Through the Looking Glass/Lewis Carroll stuff going on here.” Dragonslayer’s Legacy In the world of 500 AD magic and magicians are very much real, but in decline. The kingdom of Urland is plagued by a horrible fire-breathing flying dragon known as Vermithrax Pejorative. Urland’s King Casiodorus Rex (Peter Eyre), has made a terrible bargain with Vermithrax to keep its killings to a minimum: twice a year, it is appeased with a sacrificial virgin selected by a cruel lottery system. Apprentice sorcerer Galen (Peter MacNicol) possesses a magic amulet but hasn’t much control over its use. Encouraged to oppose the monster by his new friend, a boy named Valerian (Caitlan Clarke), Galen tries to enlist the aid of his master, the eccentric wizard Ulrich of Cragganmore (Ralph Richardson). This is obviously before CGI, but the dragon looks amazing. It is actually an amazing-looking thing they built. Someone at Paramount’s restoration division must love Dragonslayer. This UHD debut comes from a meticulous, fresh 4K scan that removes any and all print damage, leaving the imagery scuff free. Preserved grain looks fantastic, resolved brilliantly by the encode. The animators manage some great shots with moving cameras, as when the creature crawls out of the hazy darkness of the cave. One spectacular shot shows the reptile rearing up and vomiting yellow flame at the cavern ceiling. Vermithrax is given just enough personality to be loathsome. It is also given a bit of motherly sympathy when it discovers that Galen has chopped its babies into ugly dragon-bits. We’re disturbed by the dead girls and the dead monsters. Firm color gives potent energy to flames, of which Dragonslayer has plenty of. Primaries thrive over previous home video releases, the flesh tones pure and costumes bold. Greenery in forests carries brilliant zest. It's a gift from the movie gods. I was dazzled when the opportunity came up," Robbins enthused. "When they invited me to participate in the restoration, I was unaware of what power they would be applying. I was not prepared for it." Dragonslayer is now available in a restored 4K and Blu-ray release. Making the Dragon Vermithrax Pejorative Dragonslayer is a 1981 American dark fantasy film directed by Matthew Robbins from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hal Barwood. It stars Peter MacNicol, Ralph Richardson, John Hallam, and Caitlin Clarke. It was a co-production between Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Productions, where Paramount handled North American distribution and Disney's Buena Vista International handled international distribution. The story is set in a fictional medieval kingdom where a young wizard encounters challenges as he hunts a dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative. textures and superior colors. Certainly, the Blu-ray is so good that often the UHD feels like it's improving by degrees, not by leaps and bounds, The film's Academy Award-nominated score was composed by Alex North. The score's linear conception was developed through transparently layered and polyphonic orchestral texture, dominated by a medieval-style modal harmony. It was largely based on five major thematic concepts:

Hal Barwood & Matthew Robbins put everything they had into a medieval sword ‘n’ sorcery epic, filmed in England and finished in California by the best artists at ILM and VCE. It’s basic gee-whiz sorcerer- George vs. The Dragon material, but more brutal than expected. Word of mouth about some unnecessarily gory scenes tipped off parents that it wasn’t safe for small fry. Fantasy fans applauded its formidable dragon Vermithrax Pejorative, brought to life via second-generation stop-motion animation, and it’s still admired by stop-motion professionals. The 4K resolution delivers every slimy, fiery detail. Video Disclaimer: Screen captures used in the review are provided courtesy of Paramount Home Entertainment, not the 4K UHD Blu-ray disc. You also directed literally one of my favorite movies, The Legend of Billie Jean. In the last couple years, I’ve showed that movie to probably around 10 people and they all love it.
