All of which is a very, very, very long (and quite possibly inaccurate) way of saying: This was a good book that does a fine job of capturing the flavor (excuse me -- flavour) of Warhammer's Old World. This first book is more of a linked series of short stories than a novel, but that's very much in keeping with the sword & sorcery tradition. The trollslayer in question is one Gotrek Gurnisson (trollslayers are dwarves who, to atone for some grievous offence, shave their hair into a Mohawk and set out to kill as many terrible beasties as they possibly can (ideally trolls) before dying in glorious battle); accompanying him as amanuensis is one Felix Jaeger, a human who has some skeletons in his own closet. This book chronicles some of their earlier adventures as they leave civilized lands and encounter all manner of Chaos cultists, beast-men, orcs and other horrors in their wanderings through Old World cities, wilderness and (in one particularly memorable tale) the ruins of an ancient dwarf city. Those of you familiar with Gotrek’s adventures will no doubt be bouncing off the walls with excitement now (we certainly are). For those yet to be acquainted with the Slayer, here’s a brief guide to who he is, what he’s about and where you can find out more. I do this for a darker, richer gold than the Liberator Gold based recipe. There is nothing wrong with turning out Liberator Gold -> Agrax Wash -> Liberator Gold Drybrush -> Auric Gold Drybrush for a very bright gold, but I wanted a deeper gold. If you are on Iorveth's path and do not play on Insane, DON'T spend your points right away but instead do some quests until you have 8 spare points (or 7, if you already invested in Alchemy). Fast forward about seven years to 1998 (I think), and Andy Jones approached me at a convention in the US with the news that GW was returning to the fiction business and would be producing a new magazine, Inferno . So in addition to the book I bought a couple of the early adventures, which I also read & enjoyed, but that was about it.

The artist has honoured the original cover of the first Gotrek novel by using the same layout, colours and characterful expressions.
