Monograph: Devon County Council. 2000. Fire Beacons: Warning Signals across the Countryside. Fire Beacons: Warning Signals across the Countryside. A4 Unbound.

The Yorkshire coastal fortlets probably only enjoyed a brief period of Roman military use – perhaps, 20 to 30 years – before being abandoned. What happened to them next is a matter of conjecture but might have been somewhat gruesome. In the excavations at Huntcliffe fourteen skeletons of men, women and children were found dumped in the well. At Goldsborough, the archaeologists who uncovered the remains of the fort wrote: The station at West Soar appears to have had accommodation quarters on its western side. The conjectural reconstruction drawing shows this together with long flagpoles projecting from the roof of the building.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2013-2014, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV351146. Over the years there has been considerable discussion and debate about the function of the Yorkshire coastal fortlets. One suggestion is that they might have constituted a signalling chain – using beacons – monitoring movements and hostile activities along the coast. However, it would have required an enormous tower for Goldsborough to transmit any messages to Whitby, irrespective of the compounding effect of sea frets. An alternative may have been for them to communicate inland to forts such as Malton (via intermediate beacons), but it would still have taken some time for the military unit stationed there – Numerus Supervenientium Petuarensium – to mobilise and march to the coast or to intercept any raiders heading inland. On the 1841 Malborough tithe map, Plot 2212 is recorded as 'Signal House Field' on the accompanying apportionment. The building is illustrated near the western boundary of this field. The structure is also illustrated on the 1st edition 25 inch OS map (1880s) and the 2nd edition (1904-6). d) it was still some kind of signal station in 1903, but not Lloyds (as the OS does seem to prefer the use of the Lloyds name on its mapping by this date) Eddystone had provided a radio beacon service, but its range often fell short. As part of the scheme to automate Eddystone, two radio masts were erected at Penlee, for a more efficient system to be installed. Two large lattice towers were positioned in front of the accommodation. An Armoured Command Vehicle (ACV) equipped with signalling units and used throughout campaigns in North Africa and Italy can be viewed in the Museum.

Following its decommission, the keepers’ cottages were sold off in 1994, although Trinity House retained the control room and fog signal. The Dun Mor ridge that bounds the the east side of the glen is delightful, and a prehistoric fort graces the hill’s 466m summit. The walking is great, the views are expansive, there is a lot of historical interest and thank goodness Perth and Kinross Council threw out the windfarm plans that would certainly have ruined the ambience of this lovely place.

Sleightholme, J. D., 1992, West Soar and the Old Admiralty Signal Stations, 10-12 (Article in Serial). SDV352067. In 1899 tenders were requested for the building of a fog signal station at Penlee Point to assist the fog signals already in place at Eddystone Lighthouse and Plymouth Breakwater Lighthouse.

The people that were killed there and thrown into the well were defending their temple. They were thrown into the well as blasphemy to their religion, if not, why bother to put them and leave them there .. then use the very same place later as a station fort. They could have been killed outright and trashed away. erosion, consisted of a central tower surrounded by a curtain wall anda V-shaped ditch, of the same type of Huntcliff (NZ 62 SE 8), Goldsborough (NZ 81 NW 2) and Filey (TA 18 SW 2).
