As I mentioned previously, the smaller size and lighter weight made it easier to maintain stamina over a long day of shooting 4-6 hours at a time. On paper, the size and weight difference doesn’t seem like much, but over the course of a full day of shooting the reduced payload was definitely noticeable and a welcome update! However, in use, you soon get used the layout but would recommend adding an arm to help with the handling. I use the Ronin-S at least once a week, and the additional side grip is the one accessory I couldn’t now do without. That’s not all it is also smaller, which has been made possible by the advances in technology. The new RS 2 measures in at 410 x 260 x 195mm including the grip but without the extension, grip added. Compared with Ronin-S, the motors of DJI RS 2 are about 20% more powerful, while the gimbal weight is reduced by about 25%. Equipped with a 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen and redesigned built-in front dial, DJI RS 2 also supports more accessories than the Ronin-S. DJI introduced the Titan Stabilization Algorithm for exceptionally smooth footage on DJI RS 2, and this is a significant improvement compared to DJI Ronin-S. A new gimbal feature that DJI Ronin-S does not support is SuperSmooth, which can be activated for an professional level of smoothness. This feature compensates for micromovements and increases torque to stabilize even 100mm zoom lenses. This means if you are shooting on the move with the camera in different positions, your footage will always stay sharp.

DJI has taken the world of gimbal stabilizers by storm since the introduction of their first handheld gimbal, the DJI Ronin 1, in 2014 and even though there has been no shortage of competition, DJI has maintained that market dominance through innovation, refinement, and adapting to their customers needs. Carefully tailored for RS 2’s breakthrough performance, Tilta is now releasing a series operating solutions for both handheld and high performance mobile shootings that are optimized for professional filmmakers. Just as the the DJI RS 2 is a successor to the Ronin-S, the RSC 2 is a successor to DJI’s Ronin-SC. The updated gimbal is constructed of steel and aluminum, which work to increase rigidity while reducing the overall weight of the unit compared to the Ronin-SC by 35%. It also has a smaller physical footprint with a folded size of 180mm x 190mm (7” x 7.5”) — roughly the size of an A5 sheet of paper. DJI RS 2 continues pushing gimbal technology forward with the ability to support heavier payloads while capturing ultra-smooth cinematic footage. Based on years of experience developing predictive technology, a newly optimized Titan Stabilization Algorithm reduces the need for manual user input while compensating for user movement and optimizing the gimbal tilt and angle. Additionally, a new SuperSmooth mode provides another level of camera stability, especially for compensating longer focal length lenses of up to 100mm. Update the firmware using the DJI Ronin app by connecting the DJI RS 2 via Bluetooth. Do not disconnect the DJI Ronin app and DJI RS 2 during the update process. As ever the RS 2 offers a Bluetooth connection between the gimbal and the Ronin App available for both iOS and Android devices. This Bluetooth connection utilises the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technology.
