Growers may decide to buy a dedicated grow light for the seedling and vegetative phases if their current grow light doesn’t emit enough blue spectrum – the spectrum that’s critical to the vegetative phase.

Watts or wattage (W) - the amount of power which a piece of electrical equipment uses. LED bulbs are more energy efficient with a lower wattage, and will last longer than incandescent bulbs with higher wattage. Bulb shapes and sizes: Not all bulbs are the same. They won't all fit in the same lamp. Make sure to verify the size of a bulb before purchasing it to ensure you have an appropriate fixture to add it to. This isn't just for bulbs either. Blue spectrum light is in the 4000 to 6000 Kelvin range of the spectrum. Fluorescent lights: Another popular option people use to grow plants indoors is fluorescent lighting. The HLG 300L B-Spec may look small, perhaps for a 2×4 foot grow area. But the LEDs on the HLG 300L B-Spec are actually strong enough to grow seedlings and mother plants in a 4×4 foot area. The ideal environment for keeping a mother plant in is the same as you would have for vegetative growth a temperature range of 18-27Cis fine with the difference between the high and low temps being no more than 5C ideally (eg 25-28C lights on 20-23C lights off). Humidity is important to keep an eye on as if using CDM or halide bulbs or indeed sodiums the humidity will be much lower than under LED or flourescent lighting. If you’re looking for a grow light for your mother plant, you’ll only need one with a blue spectrum, in which case a dedicated blue spectrum light would also be appropriate.
