About this deal

The works of the artist who has sold most paintings in that round receives 30 points, second place receives 20 points, and third place receives ten points. The other two don’t score. So yes, there is a lot to Modern Art. There are a ton of wrenches you can throw into the system and a lot of manipulating you can do. Do those well and you’ll be in a very good spot to win. The logical next question is what levers you have at your disposal to clear up the uncertainty and tilt the field in your favor? Here are three tips that I think are worth using. Understand your market positioning and market power. Each player is dealt a hand of cards, which represent works of art that the player may offer for sale. Players then take turns putting these cards up for auction. There are several auction formats; the one used is determined by the card offered for sale. Each auction type has its own strengths and weaknesses for the active player, and among other considerations they’ll want to think about which is best for any given phase of the game. The free for all auction will provide the most predictable result, as players bid up to the perceived margin. The simultaneous bid is least predictable, though the uncertainty of it all can lead to aggressive bidding. The once around auction is most beneficial to the person to the right of the active player, as they’ll have a clear price to raise or pass. Set price has the active player determine a price, and each successive opponent can either take the art at that price or pass on it. If everyone passes, the active player buys it. There is also a water dispenser in the Espresso Bar in the Natalie Bell building on Level 3. Food and Drink

This is even more relevant if you put in those double-painting auctions. Timed well, you can bring about chaos and capture more value from an auction than you otherwise would. Develop (informal) alliances To win, you need to make the most money. And to make money, you need to be able to figure out how much a painting will rank so that you don’t overbid. It’s difficult to do when everyone is trying to do the same thing. Consider the game genre and target audience. Certain art styles are more common or expected for different game genres. For example, pixel art for retro platformers or cell-shaded graphics for family-friendly games. Think about what visuals your target players will find appealing. But is Modern Art the Card Game one worthy of its own light? Instead of living in the shadow of its bigger brother? Let’s jump in and find out. “The Greater The Artist, The Greater The Doubt” Robert Hughes

What is that I hear you say? “Is Dan finally using quotes as subtitles again? It’s been ages since he did that. I love when he does that.” Why yes, I am, and thank you for your kind words that I am totally not subjugating you to metaphorically and that are genuine, completely real words of encouragement that came out of your totally real human mouth. I needed that. The game consists of four rounds. Cards are auctioned off in each round, the number of paintings sold in each round determines the value of each artist at the end of the round. The double auction card can also be used in conjunction with another player if they play another card by the same artist However, the original auctioneer is at a risk, because the auction proceeds goes to the player who adds the second card.

The only way I could recommend Modern Art the Card Game is with a slight caveat: if you reduce the end of round trigger. Home rule the game so that you only need maybe 4 cards of the same artist, instead of 6 to trigger the end of the round. I would like to say it was just that my games were unfortunate with the shuffling, but I have even leant the game to fellow gamers who suffered the same issue. My oldest daughter played clarinet and I got her a middle grade one so we didn't have to rent it. Of course, just after we got it she quits. What it comes down to is that the more certain you are of a painting’s value, the more you’ll be able to devise an optimal bid according to the Modern Art Mathematical Mastery technique I highlighted earlier. See what paintings other people are bidding on and buying Reiner Knizia’s Modern Art is at once a critique of a certain kind of art and an example of its best qualities. Just as a great painting can strip away noise to find something true and clear, Modern Art doesn’t have a hint of fat. It provides a space for players to spar cleanly, without any distracting chrome. It’s about the players, their desire to win, and the fact that everyone else is both necessary to that goal and standing in the way.By the same token, however, Modern Art also requires a certain amount of buy-in from the players, or it can fall a little flat. If one person isn’t feeling it or just doesn’t get the concept or simply loses interest it can bring the mood down and the rest of the game can be a slog. But in fairness, this is true of many games where social interaction is the main mechanism (for example social deduction games) and at least with Modern Art it isn’t usually a long game, so while not a filler by any means it should take around the hour mark to play for three players. That is not to say that games can’t last much longer but usually, that’s because when the players are carried away by the theme, the auctions become more chaotic, raucous affairs so there are unlikely to be too many complaints. Count – 10 in a 3-player game, 9 in a 4-player game, and 8 each in a 5-player game and the remaining cards are left face down for future rounds. Entry to the collection is free for everyone. Booking is recommended for exhibitions. Exhibition entry
