About this deal

All of the films in the series are told in a non-linear fashion, which allows you to piece together the mystery and the tragedy of what has happened, although, at first, it can be disconcerting. The films are split into vignettes focused around each character, which is an exciting way of structuring things. The movies are also incredibly creepy, with the horror elements focusing on the terrifying appearances of Kayako and Toshio popping up at inopportune moments. Box Office Mojo (October 20, 2006). The Grudge has the indefinable cinematic alchemy of a classic. Something just works. The scares here are so sophisticated and brilliant – from the absurd surrealism of Toshio’s elevator ride to the primal terror of Kayako hiding under the bedsheets – and Shimizu shoots them with something almost akin to affection. There are so many iconic moments and you can feel his glee at scaring the audience. first" film is in actuality at least the third, and, if you include a couple of shorts that started the whole thing going, even further down an ordinal list. There are some ludicrous scares here too, most of which rely on loud noises and little else, but things get so desperate at one point that a plate of squid ink pasta turns into Kayako’s hair. If it were parody, it would be moderately amusing but, sadly, The Final Curse shows no signs of self-awareness.The Ju-On films are a very enjoyable watch. It’s a really good story and although the budget was very low to start with, Takashi Shimizu manages to extract the maximum atmosphere with minimal effects. It’s also very interesting to see the evolution of the franchise as higher budgets became available for the theatrical releases and better special effects allowed for even creepier scenes. Rewind to seven years earlier and the sinuous story of the curse is revealed, introducing a second supernatural presence to haunt one girl in particular, Akane (Akina Minami). The story takes in child abuse, suicide, murder, and a cursed audio cassette which has a habit of returning after being destroyed. Again, it is a valiant attempt to widen the purview of the grudge’s grip but some paths become well trodden for a reason. The second half of the movie focuses on the poor family who move into the cursed Saeki house and, while this has its fair share of disturbing images, its breezy pacing and more creative scares give it a lightness of touch that wasn’t present in the original film. In particular, the incredible punchline – a literal depiction of the curse’s never-ending nature – is so over-the-top it’s hard to not picture Shimizu laughing to himself as he was shooting it (and, as anyone who’s seen Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl can confirm, he’s not above satirising himself or his films). Ju-On: The Grudge (2002)

Like so many before him, Shimizu was a film school brat. Except his mentor there was horror stalwart Kiyoshi Kurasawa (‘Cure’, ‘Pulse’) and he helped Shimizu birth his burgeoning franchise through the use of V-Cinema (a movement akin to the west’s Direct-to-Video boom, but with a significantly better reputation).I do wonder if the moment of the television going creepily glitchy in Ju-On: The Grudge is an allusion to the similar television glitch scare in Pulse! Although they probably both bear some debt to the key ur-image of Sadako climbing out of the television image in Ring! The Grudge – An Interview with Sam Rami and Rob Tappert". Dvdtalk.com . Retrieved September 29, 2015.

With the series now becoming something of a worldwide cult phenomenon, the US remake was inevitable. Ring (and, to a lesser extent, Pulse) had already done great numbers, so Sam Raimi and Ghost House produced this English-language reworking of Ju-On: The Grudge without much fear of it failing. To their credit, they brought in Takashi Shimizu to direct and this helped preserve the purity of his vision, making it one of the less blasphemous remakes. Whilst one can see why Shimizu may have excised this in later versions, the possibilities of someone with knowledge to counter Kayako has some potential, as we see in Part 2 before veering off into a wildly different direction in a nice piece of subversion. It should be pointed out that the first 33 minutes of Part 2 are a recap of the last two arcs of Part 1, albeit with new footage to the Kyoko segment which then continues where it left off before.Sake imbued with a powerful energy will taste different to certain people. If someone has a strange reaction to it, the house is too dangerous for them.” Hot on The Grudge’s heels was this bizarre sequel that, although keeping with the six-act structure of the series, feels curiously out of place. The over-arching plot is less abstract than usual and focuses on a film crew who enter the Saeki house to investigate all the deaths that have occurred there. This is a very silly thing for them to do in such an obviously, massively haunted house, so it’s maybe the first time you think “Well, they kinda had it coming”, which does lessen the impact when they all start dying.
