About this deal

The book is handily broken down into chapters and feature reoccurring themes. The author encourages those interested in the feminist cause to create change and promote action. The chapter focusing on confidence and saying “no” was particularly interesting. It certainly caused me to reflect on aspects within my own life that are privileged and yet I have always taken for granted. a b Fetherston, Sinann (6 July 2017). "5 Feminist Podcasts for a Woke Commute". RTE . Retrieved 15 September 2017. Totally inspiring day learning about ‘Big Speeches’ from the brilliant Jessica Regan. Challenging but warm and encouraging, what else would you expect from the supportive Guilty Feminist community? Book on the next one!” – Pauline Stobbs Presented by Deborah Frances-White and Abigoliah Schamaun with special guests Chris Lani-McAllister and Danica Lani. I loved it though and should be mandatory reading for all/most feminists in the western world. It's also given me more confidence to get out there and take up space and not apologise and can the whole 'if it's okay, if you don't mind, I know you're busy' shit.

I give it 4 instead of 5 because I felt like although the length was justified, with a few more edits, it could have been more potent. (Perhaps the interviews being written like essays? I don't know.) But fourteen years have passed since her mother’s disappearance, and now Jo is finally ready to let go of the past. Yet her future is in doubt. The State mandates that all women marry by the age of thirty – or enrol in a registry that allows them to be monitored, effectively forfeiting their autonomy. At twenty-eight, Jo is ambivalent about marriage. With her ability to control her life on the line, she feels as if she has her never understood her mother more. When she’s offered the opportunity to honour one last request from her mother’s will, Jo leaves her regular life to feel connected to her one last time. Once upon a time, history was written by men, for men and about men. Women were deemed less important, their letters destroyed, their stories ignored. If you’re thinking about doing a Big Speeches workshop, Stop thinking. Book. Just did it. Feel stronger, louder, prouder. Who wouldn’t want that.” – Amy Beashel Elsewhere, Frances-White makes cases for everything from the fun of makeup, to it not necessarily being better if little girls dress up as Spider-Man instead of Elsa from Frozen (“There is an implication that male traits are better than female ones”), through to “bridezillas” constituting a power grab (but only because most men aren’t remotely interested in wedding preparations?), and how perhaps a well-expressed catcall signifies a celebration of female fertility, when men are “fertile until they die”. The Authority Gapprovides a startling perspective on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. Would you believe that US Supreme Court Justices are interrupted four times more often than male ones… 96% of the time by men? Or that British parents, when asked to estimate their child’s IQ will place their son at 115 and their daughter at 107? The podcast was created by Deborah Frances-White and Sofie Hagen in December 2015. [1] The idea for the podcast came from the pair having lunch together and often sharing their hypocrisies and double standards with each other. [2] [3] Hagen and Frances-White co-hosted the podcast until September 2016 when Hagen left. Since then a range of guests have co-hosted each episode. The podcast is recorded in front of a live audience and each episode lasts approximately 45 minutes. I need to turn my anger into influential words and persuasive ideas wherever possible" DFW works hard and is constantly challenging herself and white woman feminism and is funny sometimes. Total win. She formulates thoughts I've had eloquently and with panache.

Whilst reading this book I massively related to the section about rap music, so came up with my own example; "I'm a Feminist but I love rap and hip-hop music that regularly refers to women as bitches, hoes, whores and sluts". This book made me understand that the enjoyment of this doesn't necesarily make me a "bad feminist", and although many of these lyrics are mysogynistic I can still enjoy this style of music that makes me feel like a badass bitch. Daily Express The Guilty Feminist is accessible and honest, written with warmth. And the openness with which she and other contributors discuss their struggles m ake the book feel like a discussion with friends over a glass of wine . . . it is full of inspiring and challenging ideas, encouraging every woman to say: "I get to be heard. I deserve to be seen" I have never listened to "The Guilty Feminist" podcast but after reading some of the interviews in the book and learning about Deborah Frances-White's life I will definitely give it a go!
