Several lives especially those of soldiers were lost in the bloodshed and endless carnage. The death count of these soldiers seemed to be so high that some people believe that their spirits remain. Hikers of the Appalachian Mountain Trail who go through the passes have reported several creepy stories. Since the mid-1800s, thousands of Bigfoot sightings have been reported all over the United States (including dozens of reported sightings in the North Georgia mountains). One common misconception is that all Appalachians were against slavery. In fact, some early European settlers owned slaves, and the Cherokees held the most slaves of any Native peoples – e specially among the elite plantation owners in Southern Appalachia. While some Appalachian white farmers were slaveowners, the region as a whole didn’t depend on slave labor like the Deep South.

My son is in Cub Scouts and every year we take a trip to a cabin with the rest of his den. One kid’s uncle is a park ranger so last year we went to the park he worked at as it was near the cabin. He’d been a ranger for a good while and had some stories. The story of his first week on the job is the worst. In conclusion, Appalachian ghost stories are still told, if only in storytelling festivals, movies or books. But what serves as entertainment today was once the delivery system for a unique culture’s beliefs, hopes and fears in a strange, isolated world.
