About this deal

I read many, many thrillers and don't generally find it too much of a challenge to work out the plot. You don't get enough sense of the vastness and isolation and snowiness of the setting, though a curious penguin does make an appearance. If you like a cruise-gone-wrong, a locked-room style story or are just ready to take a trip to Antarctica, Midnight is for you! Now, add to that, she’s facing one of her greatest fears, open water (stemming from a boating accident when she was young which claimed her father’s life), as she heads off on the maiden voyage of Pioneer Group’s Antarctic trips, which will include a very exclusive art auction of art by an artist who was inspired by the area, an artist managed by Aaron who died suddenly.

Midnight is a locked room mystery story that takes place on a cruise ship that is destined for Antarctica, and lasts for 14 days. Niet veel later gebeuren er meer vreemde dingen op het schip en Olivia vraagt zich af of ze zelf ook nog wel veilig is. In September 2019, she became the youngest Canadian woman to climb Mt Manaslu in Nepal – the world’s eighth highest mountain at 8,163m (26,781ft). Still, most of Midnight feels like a series of isolated, if concerning, incidents - for some reason, the tension never really ratchets up as it should.

Wanneer haar leven in Londen uit elkaar valt, wordt Olivia uitgenodigd voor een cruise naar Antartica met haar vriend Aaron.

I could feel her frustration when she was told to just try and have fun, when she was clearly worrying about what’s happened to her boyfriend. AMY McCULLOCH is the author of Breathless, as well as eight novels for children and young adults, including the internationally bestselling YA novel The Magpie Society: One for Sorrow. I didn’t find myself all that convinced by the characters as a whole, and ultimately I wanted more of a thrill in the first half of the book since so much seemed to be packed in towards the end. I never really connected to her as a reader, and I couldn't figure out why she decided to put herself in this situation when she's so deathly afraid of being on boats. The premise definitely appealed to me, as a cruise ship is one of those either you love it or you hate it experiences, and I myself went on a similar cruise 10 years ago, which I absolutely loved, and to choose this as a setting for another chiller of a thriller seemed like a perfect choice.

McCulloch] has an eye for edgy and unusual settings, and the new novel is easily as good as her first. Thank you to NetGalley and Michael Joseph (Penguin Random House) for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review. In this pulse-pounding thriller, a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Antarctica—to camp beneath the legendary midnight sun—becomes a desperate battle for survival against a killer determined to follow their prey to the ends of the earth. This was no different but what did set it apart are the lyrical descriptions of the voyage and landscape.

Some of the twists were better than others, but it was undoubtedly a brilliant book and I devoured it!This didn’t diminish my suspense because then I was muttering at my device when Olivia was making the wrong assumptions and putting herself into worse danger.

It is a strong mystery with interesting characters (although perhaps not enough detail on the broad range of supporting ones) and a fascinating location for the action to take place.

The reveal of this person was unexpected, and I enjoyed the suspense and tension leading up to this. Amy McCulloch definitely made me feel as though I was there on the cruise ship, especially through her descriptions, when she is describing how the ship has recently been refurbished, and she brilliantly makes you feel the danger closing in. Midnight is chillingly atmospheric, with sub-zero tension and a creeping plot that makes it impossible to look away .
