About this deal

I can’t tell you much about Nesbo’s previous short story collection Karusellmusikk – my Norwegian is not what it should be – but if this compendium of jealousy, greed, twists and violence is anything to go by, it's probably brilliant. My rule is I give an author who is new to me two chances to impress me and sell me on his/her style and story-telling. It was poor in comparison to the others and I struggled with some of the scenes in it - a bit far-fetched in my opinion. Además, a pesar de lo frustrante que podían llegar a ser por ciertas injusticias la mayoría tuvo un final que dejaba una sensación de satisfacción por el desenlace que tomaba la historia.

They weren't as twisty or suspenseful as I liked but it's hard to maintain that level of drama when a story is short; some were predictable but still worth a read. Kratke su priče upravo to - kratke, jezgrovite cjeline s ograničenim brojem likova, koje se fokusiraju na samo jedan bitan događaj, no koje su ipak cjelovite i na čitatelja trebaju ostaviti jak dojam. They are a gritty set with the theme of jealousy in seven of the short stories, and the theme of power in the last five.

Authors cannot simply build a pattern of evidence and in the last three pages introduce a new character or new plot vehicle which renders all aforementioned clues irrelevant. A man walks into an Oslo bank, puts a gun to a cashier’s head, and tells her to count to twenty-five.

Simon Vance (one of my all-time favorite narrators) read London, the opening tale that was truly captivating and held my attention, and Odd. naglasak koji stavlja na likove koji su više možda zlikovci nego heroji i splet okolnosti koji ih je natjerao da to budu.I haven’t actually read any of his books yet but I plan to read Nesbo’s Harry Hole or Mankell’s Wallander soon! All good, for me the best which presciently predicts an epidemic and the moral consequences/ family dynamics in the subsequent chaos. And then there’s “Rat Island,” the longest story in the book, and the one that caused me to put the book down and walk away for a while when I finished it. With stories that vary in length, it is even more important to pay attention, as there are times when a piece is over before it really begins, meaning the reader will miss what is being presented. While some might want a review, albeit short, of each story in this collection, I chose not to do so.

I thought the first story started on a strong note, but after that the stories quickly felt too long and/or repetitive. The Trail of Discovery means the author leads the reader through a consistent set of rules and parameters for the unfolding of events. He stretches into some speculative fiction concepts in “The Cicadas” and in “The Shredder,” and takes the big concepts of multiple timelines and of eternal life and turns them into very human, albeit very dark, stories. The professional hit man who did the shooting, a Croat known as “The Little Redeemer,” is appalled to discover he hit the wrong man.Mark Deakins read as Will and Alex McKenna read as Yvonne in Rat Island, which I enjoyed less than some of the other stories.
