About this deal

Though forward-looking, her work reveals a deep awareness, both intellectual and sensory, of how the body has been represented over time and across cultures—from antique and Hindu sculpture, to Renaissance drawing and painting, to the work of modern artists such as Henri Matisse, Willem de Kooning, and Pablo Picasso. It includes photos in her studio, enlargements of the work and clippings from some of her sketch books showing newspaper pictures and medical textbooks, which reveal the source of some of her later images. Born in 1970 in Cambridge, England, Saville attended the Glasgow School of Art from 1988 to 1992, spending a term at the University of Cincinnati in 1991.

Through these letters, you follow Michelangelo going to Rome at the age of twenty-one and corresponding with his father about sending him his drawings, problems with marble shipments due to bad weather, money troubles, and a nun who claims to be family and wants financial support. About a week before Christmas my A level art student daughter announced that she really wanted a book on Jenny Saville, and you did the business for me. As an artist she is categorized among the Young British Artists, a group that also includes Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst.Profusely illustrated first monograph on a painter whose talent and subject matter earned her comparisons to such greats as Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.

Studying the reconstruction of human flesh was formative in her perception of the body—its resilience, as well as its fragility. In the striking faces, jumbled limbs, and tumbling folds of her paintings, one may perceive echoes of Titian’s Venus of Urbino (c.

I`ve had this book for over a year now and have found myself referencing it more and more often, not just for my own work but for the benefit of my painting students. The British artist Jenny Saville is best known for painting monumental close-ups of large nude women exposing things that are usually left unshown: flab, fat, bulge. Great book, great quality in the images, and honestly one of the only sources, besides in person that you will see the work this large. As Saville pushes, smears, and scrapes the pigment over her large-scale canvases, the distinctions between living, breathing bodies and their painted representations begin to collapse.

The imagery is perhaps not for everyone, but I have never yet met a serious painter who has commented disparagingly on her work. The most comprehensive monograph to be published on figurative painter Jenny Saville, one of feminism's most celebrated living artists whose monumental portraits continue to question our accepted ideals of beauty and disrupt the boundaries of race, gender, and identity. A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art in 1992, she has since exhibited, among other museums and galleries, at the Gagosian Galleries in New York and Beverly Hills, the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Rome, and the Royal Academy of Art.Saville’s paintings refuse to fit smoothly into an historical arc; instead, each body comes forward, autonomous, voluminous, and always refusing to hide. Originally intended as studies for the artist's large format figurative paintings, they became a body of work unto themselves. He is currently at work on a book about the Anglo-American relationship and an eight part television series for the BBC, The Power of Art. The articles accompanying this monograph are excellent as well -- and not nearly disturbing as the images. On the other hand, the close up images of her work do reveal her brush marks and are very interesting.
