About this deal

Yes he was young but he definitely wasn’t innocent and avoided nearly everything the others suffered. To describe this as a thriller would be inaccurate, as it slides along at a pedestrian pace and although there are many unsettling moments, it never reaches edge-of-the-seat territory because of the way the story is told. The plot had the makings of something good, but sadly the incessant and unannounced switching of timelines that takes place on almost every page was not only frustrating, but made for a really discomfiting reading experience.

Solo che quello era scritto male e risultava noioso, questo invece è scritto bene e risulta avvincente e interessante. The story begins with the thoughts of the oldest child, Girl A, the one who escaped and was able to free her other siblings. A crushing tale that delves into the horrors of a devastating past and explores its impact on the present, this novel explores the very unique and complicated world of siblings coping with shared trauma. The traumatic theme of Girl A is not the easiest to read about but the way Abigail Dean tells this story is wildly compelling. Prior to reading Girl A, I had heard of the Turpin family – a mother and father who abused and neglected their 12 children, truly horrific to read about.

Louise and David Turpin, californiani: nel 2019 sono stati processati e condannati al carcere a vita per aver abusato di 12 su 13 dei loro figli. But it's the rawest and most unflinching look at being an abuse survivor I've read in a long time as well as a honest and scathing examination of all the ways we, as a society, turn away from what we don't want to see, that instead of doing something or even just asking someone if they need help, we pretend away. She believed —with work and time—that is was possible to discard parts of the past, like an old season’s coat that you never should have bought. She’s persuasively matched and reflected by newcomer Bonsu, who grows in stature and expressivity as Ama opens herself to the outside world.
