Description

From village to village, Baboushka travelled and retold the story about the three wise men and the special baby to everybody she met, but the villagers could not help her. In a lovely recounting of a classic Russian legend, Babushka, an elderly woman who lives alone in a modest cottage, is visited by the three wise men, who urge her to join them as they bring gifts to the newborn king. But there are dishes to be washed, and floors to be swept, and Babushka is too absorbed in her work to leave her home with presents for the baby Jesus. Brief telling of the traditional Russian folk story of Babushka, and its associations with Christmas gift-giving. Chris tracked down what seems to be the story's earliest appearance, in the child's magazine Wide Awake, vol.

Some even considered that the tradition of gifting children might have begun, after the legend of Baboushka came to the forefront. In this version we have the five interlocked dolls, each of which has their own special character; they are Antonia, who represents beauty, Loretta who shows wealth, Paula who is multi-talented, Viola who represents wisdom and finally Mary, whilst she is the smallest she represents love and compassion, something to be prized. Babouscka Enters My Household - The story crossed my path about 1958, when I was about six and Howard Neal, was advanced in years. Its 10 lively songs will be a catch with all age groups, while plenty of varied, fun roles and optional parts make it suitable for either a class or whole-school production. As with all our plays, there are full production notes that give advice on scenery, prop and costume-making. In the morning, Babushka filled a container with gold balls, wood toys, and other play things for children.

People go to the midnight services, and special Christmas food includes cakes, pies, and meat dumplings. On her travels she gives away many of the gifts to small children who are in need although she never finds the three king because they have gone back to their own lands and the child has gone into exile in Egypt.

Babushka gives them food and shelter and they try and persuade her to go with them to see the Holy Child. Babushka was a poor, hardworking woman who owned little, but she managed to gather several small toys, some sweets and tiny candles to take with her. No sooner said than done, and soon the three kings were settled in Babushka’s little kitchen, eating mushroom soup and good fresh bread and honey cakes to follow, with as much tea as they wanted. She bathed and dressed in her finest clothes, and then, looking around, she began to gather gifts to take to the newborn king. Unusual that, and one that even eight decades (or so) of Communist censorship would explain convincingly.
