I'll have to look for the movie, as Jimmy Stewart won an Oscar for his portrayal of Paul Biegler, and he was always a favorite actor of mine. As a crime novel the text has a rather smug, self-congratulatory style interspersed with bon mots which rather undermine the reader's tension over the eventual outcome. Other books by Voelker were based on other legal cases in the Upper Peninsula or his love of fly fishing for brook trout. Late one night attractive Laura Manion rang the lawyer Paul Biegler to tell him that her husband had been jailed for suspected murder; and saif that the man he had shot, Barney Quill, had criminally assaulted her.

Well I will say for a book written in the 1950's this was a topic I did not expect to be, and then I found out it was a very popular book and made into a movie.

Coming in at just over 400 pages, don't let the size of this book be a deterrent -- it reads very quickly, especially since I didn't want to put it down, which is also for me the sign of a really, really good book. Before he died, it seems, Felix Vodyanov was linked to a passenger ferry that sank in 1994, an even earlier U. Basis for the excellent movie directed by Otto Preminger, who thrives in tense legal showdowns and this is perhaps his best, mostly for James Stewart's cagey performance as a deceptively wily small-town lawyer. The climax is the trial itself, so vividly portrayed that we feel we are actually present as we follow the cunning and ruthless prosecutor and get top know the calm and wise Judge Weaver. I stood looking up over the Miners' State Bank as the big waning yellow moon swam out from behind a jagged dark cliff of cloud.

Well, no, the second par of that's not fair; once it gets going, everyone begins putting in those eighteen-+-hour days and falling asleep at their desks.Based on a real-life murder case that Voelker/Traver successfully defended, the plot contains no real surprises or twists, although there are some minor reversals of fortune, and while there are some colorful characters their actions and dialogue often strain credibility to the daytime soap opera limit and beyond.

Book has slight spine head/ heel crush, one corner bump, bookplate on front pastedown, retirement village st amp on FFEP, and scattered foxing on the end-papers (text is clean). As my car turned the corner the headlights swept the rows of tall drooping elms planted by my father when he was a young man--much younger than I--and gleamed bluely on the darkened windows. The only drawback is that I couldn't help but hear the voices of the main actors from the Preminger film while reading, which is really distracting.

Highly recommended as a stretch for younger readers - a challenge to read, with a dictionary close by.This book was recommended (I thought largely on the strength of its angling-obsessed protagonist), so its fame and subsequent success on the silver screen rather passed me by. You sort of fall into the actual story and it takes a while to figure out that the trout story is no longer that of the author but that the story has actually begun.
